There are some photographs that mean more than words can ever explain.

My incredible friend H and her sisters came to me and requested a session capturing their beautiful Mother. She is living with Alzheimer’s and things are changing rapidly.

I found myself thinking about what it must feel like to be a daughter, watching the person who has always been mum slowly become someone you have to find your way back to.
There is a particular kind of grief in watching someone you love change while they are still here.

It’s in the little things.

The stories they can no longer quite finish. The names that sometimes disappear. The moments when you catch a glimpse of the person you know, and you wish you could hold that version of them there forever.

And yet, amongst all of that, there is still so much love. So much laughter. So much familiarity.
So much of them still.

This is why photographs matter.

Not because they can stop time. I know they can’t. But they can hold a moment when everything still feels familiar.
They can preserve the way her hand felt in yours, the way her children looked at her, they way she looked at you, the sound of a laugh you never want to forget.
For this family, these photographs are not simply memories of a photoshoot. They are pieces of today, kept safe for tomorrow.

Perhaps one day, when a memory becomes harder to reach, these images will help bring her back not only to her daughters, but to herself.

If you have someone you love who is changing, please don’t wait for the ‘perfect’ time. Photograph the messy, ordinary moments. The laughs and the quiet cuddles.
The hands. The wrinkles. The way they look at you.
Capture them as they are, while they are still here in all the ways that matter.
Photographs cannot keep someone from slipping away but they can make sure that love has somewhere to stay.

This beautiful mama messaged me yesterday. 2 years ago today we captured this beautiful bump. Now her girls are 5 and nearly 2 but I can still feel the magic on these photos 💫

Today you are 7 and never have I loved you more.

My funny, silly, smart, beautiful first born.

You look older than 7 here but sometimes you do. I can see the teenager in you now and the woman you are becoming. Your hand still feels small but your aura is bigger.

You have found joy and strength in swimming this year. Watching you pound the lengths in the pool has filled me with pride. You take after your papa and your front crawl is already better than mine.

You got given a certificate for kindness today at school, it didn’t surprise me. You’ve always showed kindness ever since you were a baby. Learning kisses so early in your life you would smother me in them. You cut all your hair off yesterday and donated it to a children’s cancer charity. You can’t watch movies where anyone is sad, you feel other people’s emotions like they are your own.

You’ve felt embarrassment for the first time this year, you don’t like it when I play music loudly in the car on the way to school but you have also learnt to override it. Being silly in public with your friends is your favourite thing to do. Watching you act like a total wally makes me so happy. I hope you keep that freedom in your heart forever although I know it’s a hard one to hold onto.

You love wrestling and playing rough and tumble with the boys. Your confidence is ever growing.

You still spend all your time drawing, making and writing little bits of poetry. You say you want to be an artist when you grow up and I have no doubts you could be.

You still love travel and adventure, asking for stories about all the places myself and Mike have been. You want to know details like ‘what does that place sound like’, ‘what do people eat there’, ‘what type of houses do they live in’. Your imaginary games always involve getting on planes and packing for some great expedition. Your dens are tents in jungles, and the food you cook in your kitchen are bento boxes and dumplings.

Your curiosity is special and contagious and reminds me to stay interested in all the little things this big world has to offer.

You are my greatest achievement, my muse and my why.

Happy birthday sweet girl. I love you.

Early morning or post dinner garden sessions.

When the light is low and the trees are casting dappled light on to the lawn.

When the kids are free to behave just as they always do, safe in the knowledge that they are home. The home you made for them with every piece of the love story you built together before they came.

An hour and a half of play and joy. Memories made and pictures taken.

So easy and so important.

I’m taking some last minute evening sessions over the coming weeks whilst the weather is ☀️🌞🌞🌞. Send me a dm if you are interested.

One thing you’ll rarely hear me say to children during a family session is “Look at me and smile.”

Of course, if a smile happens naturally, I love it. But I’m far more interested in the expressions that appear when children are simply being themselves.
Because I think that is what we are going to miss as mothers; when they were entirely themselves in every capacity without for once thinking they should be holding back.

So that’s what I try to capture, the connection between you and the flickers of personality that cross their little faces. The thoughtful looks, the love, the wonder, the determination, the shyness and the frustrations of when things feel tough.

I want to capture the truth of who you all are now, in this perfectly imperfect season of your life because it’s nothing short of beautiful and that is where the art lies.

Family feels.

The joy of capturing humans in their natural habitat.

Couldn’t have loved this at home session any more than I did. All the personality, all the joy, all the love and connection.

Thank you to P and J for opening your doors and asking me to join the fun.
