A Day in the Life of a Flax Flower.

At dawn, the flowers are tightly closed and as the day progresses they open up to create a wonderful wash of blue in the field. Each individual flower lasts for around six to twelve hours, and then the petals drop to the ground. More flowers continue to bloom for a few weeks. If you’d like to visit this year’s crop during this special time and see the “wee blue blossom”, there’s still time to book a place for our events on 25th July (link in bio)

Can you spot it?

The first flower appeared today so by the time our guests arrive for The Wee Blue Blossom events on 25th July we should have a field of blue. 6 tickets left for the morning slot and 3 for the afternoon.

We’re looking forward to a busy summer of events:

14th July Flax Growing & Processing: includes a tour of the mill and a demonstration of flax processing, including the restored 1940’s scutching turbine in action.

25th July The Wee Blue Blossom: includes a farm walk and time in the flax field to see this year’s crop in bloom.

22nd and 23rd August: The Flax Meitheal Harvest Celebration 2026 in partnership with Fibreshed Ireland and Brink!

Flax Growing & Processing Event at Mallon Farm now open for booking:

Over the course of two hours we will discuss growing and processing flax as part of a regenerative farming system. You will have a tour of the scutching mill and see how we process our flax. There will be an opportunity to see the 1940’s Mackies scutching turbine that Charlie restored in action.

Tea and coffee is included in the price (please let us know of any allergies).

This event is suitable for ages 16 and above.

Prior to the event we will email you directions with our phone number in case of any problems.

Come for a farm visit which will include a visit to the flax field. Over the course of two hours we will discuss growing and processing flax as part of a regenerative farming system. You will see the flax field, have a guided farm walk and a tour of the scutching mill. There will be an opportunity to have some free time in the field to take photos.

Blossom and blue sky at the farm yesterday.
Waiting for the first swallow to arrive, we’ve seen them around Lough Neagh so it won’t be long. There’s still a bit of frost in the mornings but it’s feeling like the end of a very long winter.
We had a great day firing up the scutching turbine. We were sure this fibre was over retted when we had it out on the field. It rained day after day and we just couldn’t get it dried but it’s actually some of the best we’ve processed, a gorgeous colour and coming out beautifully clean.

'The volunteers marvel at what can be achieved when they pull together as sheaves, stand together as stooks...'

We've just spent a couple of days in Clonakilty at the kind invitation of . She had suggested to a few people that they might plant some flax around the town. She said the general response was 'Sounds good, how can we help? ', it snowballed a bit and so we found ourselves in the , a roomful of people talking about how we might plant flax in plots all over the town.

It was the perfect venue, having just won Best Sustainable Wedding Venue. The ONeill family and their team walk the walk. You can see it in the gardens, the food, the composting, the solar and all the little touches., and in the way they support their community through projects like this.

have helped to find the plots. They have been active in the town for decades, and it shows. Not just in how the town looks but in how the community acts, that 'how can we help' attitude. They see the problems of fast fashion first hand at the recycling bins, they get it.

The project won't be short of expertise, , local farms, the Women's shed .ie and Fernhill grounds team were all there getting into the technical details.

Creative forces and .scallan are supporting, organising, designing and inspiring. listened, drew, and beautifully captured the journey so far and the hopes for the future.

hosted an evening session where we plotted and planned surrounded by their spectacular Samhain masks, all made from natural materials. Imagine costumes made from flax fibre.

Our friend Malu spoke about their mission to rebuild textile production in a better way. This is Clon making a start.
