A lifelong passion

Will Harvey is a lifelong resident of Dartmoor with a passion for making.

When Will was seventeen, he moved out of his family farm on Dartmoor and started living in a tent pitched up outside John Hagger's leather workshop in Dartington, where he had started working as an apprentice. He spent two years in the tent, and a further six years working at the workshop, learning everything he needed to become a master leather worker, helping to develop the business and specialising in creating stunning bespoke pieces and intricate designs for all kinds of customers and briefs. He also taught at Leather School for many years.

Will has been crafting from leather since 2010. As well as designing and hand-making his own bags, belts, wallets and other accessories, Will loves passing on his skills and teaching others leathercraft.

✨Thankyou Daniel Burston! One of our first students at Dartmoor leather before we took on Leather school, there are rumours that he shall return for an intermediate course this autumn. A grower by trade he uses his skills and knowledge picked up here in the leather workshop to create useful and practical things for his own use as well as beautiful bags for his children. ✨

Check out our intermediate course and whether it might be right for you. 🔽

Dartmoor Leather have been working on an exciting new project with and Greg from Moreton forge (http://www.moretonforge.co.uk). All within a few miles here on Dartmoor!

Katherine Miles is an incredible Willow weaving artist. Creating huge life like forms of flora and fauna that you might encounter here on the moor.

"Inspiration for me mostly comes from Dartmoor, where I live, walking ancient pathways passing sheep and highland cattle, noting the beautiful forms of trees, lichen and fauna through the changing seasons."

If you haven't already we would thoroughly recommend checking out her studio in Moretonhampstead, a lovely hour long ramble from our workshop on top of the hill down into Moreton proper. It truly is a feast for the eyes and soul".

Every time we step outside and wander the lanes up here on Dartmoor, we’re reminded of just how lucky we are. The hedgerows are in the first day of their July madness - tumbling, blooming, buzzing with life - and the sun sits warm on our backs as we walk. down our favourite road, across our closest down, back to our abundant farm where our workshop patiently waits.

Back in the workshop, there’s a peaceful clam that settles around the tools and leather. It’s a calm space held within the beautiful roar of the moor in summer. These small moments of stillness and wildness shape everything we make.

A Very Happy Moment for Leather School®

We’re feeling super excited here at Leather School® - we’ve been featured in Reconnect Magazine! It’s so good to remember our roots, reflect on the journey and see how far we’ve come.

To see our craft, our students, and the spirit of the Leather School® community shared in print is something we’ll treasure for a long time and is definitely going on the wall! It’s beautifully written and presented - on the centrefold page no less! You can pick up a copy for free in loads of shops around Devon. So, if you spot it, do grab one. And read all about my story from being an apprentice to leading Leather School.

This feature has landed at the perfect time, just as we’ve wrapped up our first fully booked and wonderfully successful Tooling Course. The energy in the workshop was incredible - mallets tapping, swivel knives carving, everyone completely absorbed in the flow of making (biscuit consumption was down on account of their total absorption). It’s been such a joy to add tooling to our repertoire, and it’s already a firm favourite.

Thank you everyone!

This morning, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to all the fathers and father figures out there. For the steady support, for the encouragement, for the patience, the humour, the guidance, and the countless moments that help shape us into who we are becoming. These moments mean more than our dads can ever realise.

Here at Dartmoor Leather, we’re thinking of the dads who taught us how to work with our hands, how to take care of what we have, and how to show up for the people we love. Those lessons stay with us — in the workshop, in our families, in the way we move through the world.

Thank you for everything you do. Thank you for who you are. Happy Father’s Day!

Thursday is the last day we are able to post to reach you in time for fathers day. Don't miss out. 🔥

One more classic belt on its way to a lucky father out there somewhere!

Each belt begins its life in Bakers tannery in east
Devon, spending well over a year in the oak bark pits
before it reaches the workbench. Oak bark tannage is a
gentle 14-month-long process that protects the natural
fibres of the hide. It produces a more eco-friendly and
luxurious leather hide, renowned for its strength,
durability and distinct characteristics. Unlike corrected
grain leathers, the natural markings of the skin are
visible, meaning that every piece made with oak bark
tanned leather is unique.

When the leather arrives at our Dartmoor Leather
studio, it is carefully checked over and then we set
about turning it into our belts and card wallets. Every
belt is made by hand - cut, holed, bevelled, edge dyed,
burnished, waxed, veined, stitch marked, riveted,
stitched, oiled and polished, before being packed up
ready for someone special.

If you’re looking for something meaningful for Father’s
Day, something made with care and built to last, this
could be it.

Wow! We are blown away by the determination and creativity we've just witnessed this weekend here at the Dartmoor leather workshop! These pieces of art are what our amazing students have wrought from plain pieces of leather! Hats off to them, what a triumph!
