A rather special visitor arrived on the bench this week: a replica helmet from the Pitchfork Rebellion, brought in for repair before it begins its new life in a museum’s hands‑on collection.

The leather hinges on the chin flaps were dried out beyond repair so replacements were needed. A few hours, a lot of elbow grease (as well as some actual grease) and we have a perfectly serviceable helmet once more!

Say hello to Jessie — our remarkable local tanner

Just over the hill from our Dartmoor Leather workshop lives someone truly special: Jessie, one of the very few people in the UK still tanning hides using ancient, natural methods.

While most modern tanning relies on chemicals and speed, Jessie works slowly, patiently, and entirely by hand. She tans her hides using smoke and tree bark, allowing the leather to take on a warm, rustic hue that feels as old as the landscape itself.

There’s something wonderful about knowing that this traditional craft is happening quite literally a stone’s throw from our studio. Dartmoor has always shaped our work and Jessie’s leather carries that same sense of place.

We’re proud to celebrate local makers who keep these rare skills alive. Here’s to Jessie, her dedication, and the beauty of naturally tanned leather.

✨We are always so grateful to our AMAZING students! ✨

"A weekend full of learning, designing and making 2 leather items at the end of which I felt as if I'd achieved so much having not worked with leather before. I was really chuffed with my belt and bag, both made for family members who had gifted the course to me for my birthday.
Will was a great teacher, helping me to understand the techniques required for leather work as well as to explore my own design and to not be afraid to achieve it.
The work shop was well equipped and a beautiful location in which to be immersed in creativity. It was lovely to meet others and to admire their skills and creativity as they worked, and to share in conversation, coffee, cookies and cake too!"

Tooling: Where Leather Comes Alive.

There’s a moment in leatherwork when the material stops being just a surface — and starts becoming a canvas. That’s what our Tooling Course is all about.
It’s hands on, quietly absorbing, and incredibly satisfying — the kind of craft that invites you to slow down, breathe, and let the tools do the talking. Whether you’re completely new to leatherwork or already making your own pieces, tooling opens up a whole new world of creative possibility.

What's involved?

The course will cover:
• An introduction to different leather and its uses
• How to select the correct leather for tooling
• An introduction to tooling techniques and tools
• Practising the techniques and use of the tools, including swivel knife and stamps
• Designing a pattern
• Casing the leather in preparation for tooling
• Mapping out the pattern on your leather
• Tooling and carving your own design
• Leather dying and finishing

Leatherworking Tools: How to select your perfect ensemble.

Choosing the right leatherworking tools is one of the most satisfying steps in developing your craft. Whether you’re just starting out or refining a professional toolkit, the tools you select shape not only the quality of your work, but the pleasure you take in making it. At Dartmoor Leather, Will has built, refined, and obsessed over his own tool collection for years, and learned a thing or two along the way. Here’s our guide to assembling a toolkit that feels like an extension of your hands.
