From shawl to dress..........

This was originally a shawl that I was given to sell on Vinted. It's made of wool with silver white silk embroidery. It was such a beautiful textile that I thought I'd transform it into a dress and use it as a demonstration of zero waste construction. I used pleating and wrapping techniques on the stand to achieve the silhouette and cut a small amount from the hem to make the collar.

Multi seasonal wool jacket. Takes you from Autumn to Spring....

I made this sample wool jacket a few years ago and it is one of the most versatile pieces I have ever made. It also catches everyone's attention with it's bold use of colour and pattern.
I have therefore decided to make a few more and I will be posting them for sale on my website, but these ones will be reversible!!! Two jackets in one - What's not to love. Here are the pieces for the two different sides on my cutting table.

The beauty of reinvention

A wedding dress is probably the biggest clothing investment that a woman ever makes. However it is worn once and then shut away and never worn again, which I always think is a pity.
So when approached me during our time working together on The Government Inspector and asked me to alter her wedding dress into a top and skirt, so that they could either be worn together or separately, I was more than happy to oblige.
So don't hide your wedding dress away. Bring it us at The Artwear Emporium and we will reinvent it, so that it can still have a place in your life, after the big day.

The Artwear Emporium has found it's first stockist.....

From 1st May to 31st July, The Artwear Emporium will be stocked within the South Lanes in Brighton.
This collection represents TAE's multiple approaches to truly sustainable, ethical and eco friendly fabrics with pieces in deadstock fabrics, undyed fabrics painted with natural inks and our own in house made zero waste textiles, made from the offcuts generated from the other fabrics that we use.
This creates the circular low waste model which is at the heart of The Artwear Emporium.
All pieces are in The Artwear Emporium studio in Tyne and Wear. Make every outfit you wear a work of art.

Creating a zero waste textile.

So happy to get to back to creating my zero waste textiles.

When you make your living as a creative, you often have to put the pure creative side aside, to earn money from jobs that pay immediately, in order to make ends meet.
I feel like I have been doing that a lot for the last few years, so it's wonderful to get back to some pure creation.

I am currently putting together a small collection that will feature in in Brighton. They will be my first stockist and I'm so excited to have finally found a company that really understands small sustainable brands and genuinely wants to help them become more established.

I will be posting the making process here, so stay tuned for more "in the studio" posts.

Presenting the multi seasonal cocoon coat...

I am on my last week on tour with Birdsong and I thought I take the opportunity to capture this new design prototype that I have been testing out on the second leg of this tour.

This is a lightweight, water resistant full length coat, with plenty of room underneath for layers - this allows the wearer to wear it through autumn winds, winter chills and spring rains, by having a warm lightweight water resistant layer on top which you can add or subtract layers to underneath, depending on temperature.

This prototype is made from end of line synthetic materials but my intention is to make a new version of this design in a combination of wool wadding and beeswaxed cotton or linen, to maintain the lightweight, warm, waterproof aspects without using synthetic materials.

Hand painted long sleeved wool jersey top

Loved painting this wool jersey top that I designed and made. The printing inks from are great to work with. I ironed the top to fix the colours and then hand washed it, to see how much ink came out. A little bit of the blue inks came out, but not very much.
Looking forward to making more pieces. This wool jersey from is lightweight and super smooth - lovely to wear for all seasons.

First look at a piece for my new limited edition product line.

I have been down a bit of a materials research rabbit hole, and it's been an eye opener particularly when it comes to dyes.
I discovered that if you take a natural fibre and dye it with a synthetic dye, it is no longer biodegradable. And even with eco reactive dyes on the market, you are still adding polymers to fabrics which are toxic to us and the environment.
So I found this undyed wool jersey fabric from and natural dye printing inks from. Am going to paint this top with the inks and see how it comes out.

Happy to be reclaiming my joy for knitting again.
Until 5 years ago I knitted all the time, but I was getting caught up in complex patterns and styles and lost the pleasure I get from the process.
So am getting back into it by making a simple throw and using up a bag of small balls of silk yarn.
