I am so upset and enraged by the billions of plastic pellets that have washed up along our beautiful coastline in North and South Shields. But what has enraged me even more is the indifference from local people as we went to do our little bit this afternoon. This was just a slither of beach down at the Fish Quay, and whilst there was a team of professionals, not one other member of the public other than ourselves was helping them to clean up. People stood around watching, or discussing it whilst eating their ice creams, and then left. People with children who told them ‘it’ll be a big job’ and an older couple collecting shells to take home, leaving the pellets to wash back into the sea. Others who ignored it completely.

I implore you, if you’ve got kids this school holidays and you’re stuck for something to do, take them to clean our beaches, teach them the importance of community and caring about our environment, our sea creatures, our water! If we don’t, no one will. Whilst it is obvious that those who are accountable need to be held to that, to sit back and watch this devastate our local coastline is to me completely deplorable.

Well done to those who have took an hour or two out of their week to help, if we all did our bit the difference made would be 1000% worth it
