Few names in British showjumping carry as much respect as David Broome CBE. Born in Cardiff in 1940, Broome became one of the most successful and admired riders Britain has ever produced, combining courage, precision and natural horsemanship in a career that inspired generations. 🏇
Broome first captured national attention at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, where he won individual bronze riding Sunsalve. That same year, he was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, a remarkable achievement for a young equestrian athlete. He later won another Olympic individual bronze in 1968, this time with the famous Mr Softee, confirming his place among the greats. 🥉✨
Across five Olympic Games, multiple European Championships and World Championship success, Broome showed what true consistency looks like. He became World Champion in 1970, claimed three individual European titles, and helped Great Britain win team gold at the 1978 World Championships.
