☀️ SOLAR ECLIPSE | 12 AUGUST 2026 🌤️

A fascinating celestial event is taking place today, with much of Northern Ireland expected to experience an impressive partial solar eclipse. 🌒

According to the latest forecast, 93%+ of the sun could be covered across parts of the region — an incredible sight if the cloud stays away! 👀

If you’re heading outside to catch a glimpse, remember to never look directly at the sun without proper solar viewing protection. 🕶️

Solar eclipse forecast 12/08/2026

DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN AS IT WILL CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO YOUR EYESIGHT.

So far it is looking favourable for viewing this evening. A few stray clouds may obstruct it in places. Key times are below:

Maximum eclipse 1908/09

I’ve included a poorly drawn map showing how much coverage of the Sun you can expect. The further south and west will mean a deeper eclipse.

Please observe this phenomena safely.

Use appropriate solar glasses clearly marked with CE and ISO 2015. Sunglasses are completely useless to view a solar eclipse so don’t even bother using them. Don’t look at the eclipse through a mobile phone camera. The sunlight will damage the camera. You can put a a solar viewer over it to capture an image.

A salad colander can be used. With your back to the Sun allow the light to shine through the holes. Move it towards the ground until it focuses an image of the eclipse.

Look at the eclipse in water. A bowl, plate, bucket, lake/sea. This will depend on if the Sun can project an image on to it.

Pinhole camera. Put the point of a pen into a a piece of paper or card to make a very small hole. Use another bright surface/page to focus the image from the sunlight.
