29th of August sorry folks I missed yesterday. I shall be glad when I feel properly mended. This illness is taking a while to get over, but I suppose you don't bounce back to health as easily when you get a bit older.
Anyway, today is the birthday of Het-Hor, the Egyptian goddess Hathor and today is the day for a party!
Hathor is goddess of the home, of comfort and joy and also of beauty and love. Her symbols are a cosmetic palette and her magic mirror. She is the embodiment of the joy of living, music, dance and entertainers.
We are told that the party started at her Temple in Dendera at sunrise, when her statue was taken out onto the terrace and was greeted by worshippers, 'All those who are gathered together are drunk with wine and crowned with flowers.'

27th of August Happy Birthday to Nut, the ancient Egyptian Sky Goddess.
Nut is often portrayed as a naked female figure, painted dark blue and her body covered in stars. Her body arches over the recumbent figure of Geb, the Earth God, her brother and lover.
Her limbs are the four pillars of heaven and mark the four cardinal points at the horizon.
In Egyptian belief when a soul is accepted into heaven they are transformed into a star, known literally as a Shining One, and transported by Nut to their heavenly re-birth.

26th of August is the ancient Egyptian Day of Jubilation in the Heart of Ra.
In ancient Egypt the heart was thought of as the place of the mind, the personality, thought, understanding, wisdom, emotions and memories and the place where the immortal soul resided.
So this was a celebration of the benevolence, wisdom and grace of the Sun God.

25th of August Today is sacred to the Scottish god Mourie or Mhor Ri (Great King). He is asked for blessings or healing by tieing pieces of cloth or ribbon to sacred trees - a tree near a spiring for example. He was also left small silver offerings such as silver coins, buttons or silver buckles which were popular.
An alternative was to set up a stone and leave an offering of a saucer of milk.

24th of August 1759 William Wilberforce was born.
He is chiefly remembered as the leader of the British movement to abolish the slave trade.
Wilberforce was a native of Hull and his former home is now a museum open to the public and includes exhibits about the slave trade and its abolition. The last time I visited they had set up an example of a Voodoo altar, which I really enjoyed.
The first Slave Trade Act was passed in 1807 followed by the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833. This second act abolished slavery in most of the British Empire - Wilberforce died just three days later.
William Wilberforce was against cruelty of all kinds and also championed the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, later to become the RSPCA

23rd of August Today is the Roman feast of Vulcan and the Nymphs.
Vulcan/Hephaestus is the god of all metal working crafts, brewing, fire and volcanoes.
Pliny wrote that this was the time of year when people began working by candle light and you can really feel that the nights are drawing in and it is later before it gets light in the mornings.
This festival was celebrated by frying fish and giving some to Vulcan.
Sounds like fish and chips and a beer would be ideal!

21st of August is the Roman feast of Consualia and Consus guardians of the harvest.
Consus' altar was hidden underground and only revealed at his two festivals. Grain was kept in underground silos, Consus domain.
Horses are sacred to Consus, as they were used to grind the grain into flour, so today was a holiday for all horses. Horses were garlanded with flowers and even paraded through the streets.
Although horse racing was also a part of the celebrations.

20th of August Thanks to those lovely folks who are sending me healing wishes. This has been and still is a debillitating illness - I lost 8 kg in a week, so trying to build up again will take a little while.
20th of August 1890 H P Lovecraft was born. The writer of weird and disturbing fiction - something I love! He invented a whole panthaeon of Elder Gods, dark, mysterious and fearsome creatures from the realms of Chaos. Perhaps the best known as Cthulhu, Gol-gorath and Yog Soth.
Some stories include mention of a mysterious and dangerous book named The Necronomicon - the Book of Dead Names. Such a book was just longing to be written and several people have had a go at it. I have at least four different versions in my collection.

19th of August Thank you to everyone who has wished me well, I am improving but the illness took a lot out of me - literally.
Today is the Roman feast of Vinalia Rustica with offerings to Venus as Goddess of fruit and veg. This is a festival primarily looking forwards to the first pressings of the grape harvest and the first wine of the season, known as vinum spurcum (impure wine). This was the wine drunk by the general populace and for domestic use, as opposed to the pure wine brewed as sacred offerings to Jupiter.
Offerings to Venus include the herbs myrtle and mind, bands of rushes hidden in a cluster of roses. Venus' blessings are love, popularity, charm and wit.

18th of August Hello folks, sorry I haven't posted for a few days as I have been unwell.
I am still not better so I can't guarantee I'll manage it every day just yet.
But anyway here is something for today. It is Warlock Day, when any child born today has psychic powers and the potential to become a Warlock.
Today was also the day when the Coven Summoner, the Man in Black, would be out looking for likely recruits and reminding Witches of the latest meeting.
In the middle ages there were strict rules about the types of cloth and colours of fabric and the styles of clothes people of various 'ranks' and professions could wear, so a man dressed all in black would be quite special.
