After a summer of playing and dancing at UK Folk Festivals, and three months freelancing with I am getting on with a curtain commission from my glorious friend . She’s designed the colour scheme and warp design with my help, and using yarns from I am weaving her a set of curtains for her home. I will be making the curtains from scratch, weaving the cloth, and sewing the curtains so it’s a very exciting project for me! I’m hoping they will be done within the next few weeks to keep her toasty warm through The Sheffield autumn and winter seasons. It also happen to be my largest ever project to date, also extremely exciting!

I’m just putting the finishing touches to the latest collection of hand woven scarves and blanket scarves. The muted, natural tones of the Heather moors are so soft, and the combination of colours in the warp mean that the scarves will go with so many items of clothing. The wonderful is modelling the first one fully complete, and they will be available to buy on my website by the end of the week.

Snipping the loose ends off all the washed and dried woven cloth. This is one of the final finishing processes, so keep a look out for the new woven products that’ll be available on my website. The cloth is being made into some large blanket scarves and some smaller scarves too.

Splosh splosh splosh, wet cleaning the cloth in the bath. Wet finishing is a very important process as it’s what turns the individual strands of wool into a finished piece of cloth. The fibres swell and fill out any gaps between the warp and the weft. It also removes any excess lanolin or coating on the wool making the cloth much softer than it would be if it wasn’t washed.

And, she’s off! All ready to be washed and dried and turned into a series of scarves, cushions, and a large shoulder wrap.

I tried to eek as much as I could out of this warp as I was enjoying it so much, weaving right up till I could weave no further. But this shows the back stick very close to the heddles which means the isn’t much of a gap to pass a shuttle through, time to chop off!

I have truly adored weaving this 6 metres of cloth, the variation in the warp with striped and solid areas has really been brought out. Even though the weft colour has been the same heather purple throughout each section looks totally different and unique.

I just love this section of cloth, the contrast between the creamy coloured wool (incidentally the shade is called “granny’s best mash”!) and the slate grey is so intense. It really echos the fluffy balls of sheep against the rocky landscape on Ladybower Tor.

This warp was inspired by the soggiest of days on a long tramp up to Ladybower Tor in December, but as I was weaving I was drawn to another memory of the exact same walk back in September. It was one of those days with the last of the summer warmth, the heather which blankets the area was just going over, leaving a gorgeous mauve and faun colour plastered over the landscape.

I wanted to draw these two memories together in the cloth, the same place with different memories melded and interwoven together to create a truly individual piece.

This gives a good overview of how wide I can now weave using the new 120cm reed, as I can’t even fit the whole cloth in shot! I find it hypnotising watching the singular strands of wool interlace creating a solid cloth beneath my fingertips, and it’s even more special now I have the ability to create even more of it.
