People often ask why we don't spend all day out exploring on holiday.

The truth is, for Ollie, holidays are hard.

Being autistic means everything is different. A new villa, a new bed, different foods, a different routine, the heat, suncream every day, unfamiliar places... it's a lot to process. Even something as simple as eating lunch out can become overwhelming because of the flies, the noise or all the unexpected changes.

He needs time to regulate, and that's okay.

We managed mornings out and the occasional lunch, but we quickly learnt that the happiest version of Ollie is the one who's allowed to follow his own pace. If that means spending hours in the villa, swimming in the pool and enjoying his safe space, then that's exactly what we'll do.

And honestly? Watching him happy and content is far more important than ticking off another tourist attraction.

The only downside... I seriously need to stop overpacking. None of us even wore evening outfits, and I could have easily survived the week with two outfits on repeat.

Moral of the story: stop paying for extra luggage... unless it's full of safe foods, of course.

This post isn't about judging anyone or telling parents what they should or shouldn't do.

It might just look like an old blue cot sheet. But to us, it's so much more than that.

When Oliver was a baby, we wrapped him so tightly in this little blue sheet because it was the only way he'd settle to sleep. Looking back now, I sometimes wonder... were those the first signs of autism that I didn't recognise? Maybe.

That same "blanket" has been by his side ever since.

It's travelled everywhere with us. It's been loved, worn out, ripped apart and sewn back together more times than I can count. And yes... he kept the ripped-off piece too.

It has to be folded in a very particular way. Before it goes in the wash, he needs plenty of warning. Nothing about it can change unexpectedly.

Now he's 13, and every time life feels too loud, too overwhelming, or he just needs to feel safe, that blanket is there. Resting on his chest, exactly where it has always been.

For years I wondered when he'd grow out of it.

Now I hope he never feels he has to.

Because somewhere along the way, he found something that helps him regulate, something familiar in a world that often feels unpredictable. He found his own safe place.

To someone else, it's just an old, faded cot sheet.

To Oliver, it's comfort, security, and calm.

And to me, it's a reminder that sometimes the smallest, simplest things can carry the greatest sense of safety. I will always be grateful that he found his.

Selective eyesight is a genuine parenting phenomenon.

Shoes? Missing. School jumper? Vanished. Water bottle? Nowhere to be seen.

One tiny piece of sweetcorn on a pizza? Found in 0.2 seconds.
