And she said “you’re not going to like this” there was no drama in her tone, no panic, the sentence was completely dry, it landed in front of me like a stone falling into sand.

And I thought “this is going to cost me”

“I want to go to prom”
After 18 months of not wanting the rigmarole, the pomp and ceremony.
“I want to go to prom”

I say, “Oh”

“Yeh, I know I said not, but I’m thinking now, you know, my friends are all going now, so….”

Wait for it, it’s definitely going to cost me…

“…I need a dress”
We all know it’s not just going to be a dress.

I know a few people in the prom dress business, I make some calls, we have appointments booked.
“Ok Molls, make yourself available tomorrow afternoon, we’re looking at dresses.”

“Oh ok. Yeh….great”
She didn’t mean that, another stone drops into sand.
The pause in between is a little too long.

“It’s just, you know, I’d prefer it if you made it”

Prom is in 4 weeks.

And actually I do like it, I’m so happy she asked.
I can’t think of any other dress I’d rather make.

I’ve heard many customers say ‘it’s only a hem’ but on your bridal gown it is quite literally the line between glamour and practicality. Too short and you lose a little elegance, too long and you’ll trip. Pin hemming a vintage Ronald Joyce bridal gown. Pin hemming gives a perfect line from the outside and the inside. Turn the hem once and stitch no more than 1mm from the edge, trim your excess, turn the hem again stitching no more than 2mm from the edge. It’s precise I know, and yes, it does matter!

Procrastinate as much as you want, the hem is not going to cut itself.

Couldn’t turn down a little 6 layer bridal gown hem. After 12 or more months of not sewing it’s been a delight to be back on my machine.

This must be 28 years ago! The first wedding dress I had ever made, I’ve since lost count of how many have been created, along with bridesmaid, evening and prom dresses. And even still only yesterday, my trusty Bernina, the machine I made this dress on came out to finish a lace edge hem. It’s in semi retirement from sewing , a little like I am too, but we work together same as we always did. Slipping back into comfort.

It’s not always just the bride that needs alterations, this is Joe’s jacket, pinned then in pieces, it went back together very well and a size smaller. I’ll show you a picture of the finished article after tomorrow when Joe marries my lovely friend Lizzie Starling
