🤣 Big kids are flipping good fun too. 😂

Can we stop wishing our children would stay little forever?

At this time of year, Instagram is full of:
“I wish I could freeze time.”
“I wish they’d stay this little forever.”
“Enjoy them while they’re young.”
“You only get 18 summers.”
I know what people mean. I really do.

But as a parent whose daughter never got the chance to grow up, I find these posts incredibly hard. ❤️

Because watching your children grow is a privilege not everyone gets.

Because when did we decide that early childhood is the best bit of parenting?”

Yes, I loved the tiny years. The cuddles, the funny voices, the little hands. 👶

But I also LOVE watching them become young people. 👩

Their opinions. Their humour. Their independence. Discovering who they are.
And this summer we've done things we couldn't have done as easily when they were little — from hiking and paddleboarding to learning blackjack!

Big kids are flipping good fun too. 😂
There's something wonderful about reaching the stage where you can just hang out. Have adventures. Talk. Laugh. Get to know the person they're becoming.
Of course I'll feel nostalgic for the little versions.

But I don't want to freeze time,
I want more time. ⏳️
More birthdays. More summers. More adventures. More versions of them.

❤️ So perhaps instead of “enjoy them while they're young,” we should simply say:
Enjoy them.
Enjoy every version.
Because growing up isn't something to mourn.
It's the privilege of getting to see who they become. ❤️

Nope.
I’m calling time on this one. 😂
I know it’s supposed to be inspiring.
But honestly, I find it quite depressing.

Because suddenly every summer becomes a countdown.

16.
15…

QUICK! BOOK SOMETHING!
CREATE A MEMORY!
MAKE IT MAGICAL!
DON’T WASTE A SUMMER!
😱

And before you know it, you're trying to turn every Tuesday into a Pinterest-worthy childhood experience.

Can we just take a breath?
Because what happens at 18?
Do we all pack away the camping equipment?
Cancel the holidays?
Stop having adventures?
Hand our children a birthday card that says:
“Thanks for the memories. That's your lot. Good luck!” 😂
Of course not.

At 44, we still go on holiday with our own parents.
And I know plenty of families who happily holiday together when their children are in their late teens and twenties and beyond!

Because 18 isn't an expiry date on family time let's stop counting the summers and just flipping enjoy them!!

🌞 HOLD UP… WHO DECIDED SUMMER IS OVER?! 😂

I keep seeing everyone talking about the end of summer already… 👀🍂

Well, just for the record, I’m following the astronomical calendar around here. 😌✨
Which means summer doesn’t officially end until 23rd September, when the Autumn Equinox arrives. 🌍☀️🍁

So while everyone else is getting their pumpkins, cosy jumpers and “hello autumn” posts ready… 🎃🧣🍂

I’ll be over here like:
“SUMMER IS STILL IN SESSION, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.” 😎🌞🍹
There’s still time for BBQs, sunny days, ice creams and summer fun. 😂

🌿✨ Process over product. Freedom over perfection. Play over “getting it right”. ✨🌿

This week at Boots and Brambles Forest School, we’ve been celebrating the beautiful freedom that comes when children are given the space to explore, experiment, create and PLAY. 🌳🍂🎨

In our family sessions, we’ve been exploring art in nature, using natural treasures to make prints and patterns. 🌿🪵🍃

And during our Stone Age Survivors Holiday Clubs, we took things even further — exploring mark making and creating our own colours and dyes from nature. 🪨🌸🫐🌱

But the magic wasn’t in the finished creations…
✨ It was in the process.
It was children selecting natural materials, wondering “What will happen if…?” 🤔
Mixing, mashing, stirring and experimenting. 🥣🌿
Inventing their own ways to filter natural materials.
Combining colours. 🎨
Making patterns.
Changing their minds.
Trying again.
Getting messy.
Discovering something unexpected.
And simply enjoying the experience. 💚
There was no “right” way. No perfect end product. No pressure to make something that looked a certain way.
And what we saw was beautiful. 🌈
Because there’s so much focus nowadays on getting things right, following instructions, copying an example and producing something that looks “good”.
But children need freedom too.
🌱 Freedom to wonder.
🌱 Freedom to make mistakes.
🌱 Freedom to experiment.
🌱 Freedom to follow their own ideas.
🌱 Freedom to play without a purpose.
🌱 Freedom to create without worrying about the end result.
Sometimes the most valuable thing we can create isn’t something we can take home…
It’s curiosity, confidence, creativity, resilience and a love of exploring the world around us. 🌍💚
So here’s to muddy hands, unexpected colours, wonky patterns, curious minds and the joy of process over product. 🍂🎨🌿
Because when children are given the freedom to play, magic happens. ✨

🌿🪵 STONE AGE SURVIVORS ✔️ 🪵🌿
Well… that’s a wrap on our Boots & Brambles Forest School Holiday Clubs for Summer 2026! ☀️🌳

What an incredible three weeks we’ve had in the woods with some fantastic children! 🥰 We’ve got muddy, tried new things, and, most importantly, had an absolute blast! 🙌

We kicked things off with our Bushcraft & Wildcraft Warriors Clubs 🪓🌿 and rounded off the summer with TWO awesome Stone Age Survivors sessions! 🏕️🔥

Our Stone Age adventurers have:
🪵 Built their very own Stone Age shelters
🪓 Used tools to make Stone Age weapons & tools
🫐 Foraged for berries
🐾 Hunted for signs of animals
🎨 Created natural dyes & Stone Age art
🌳 Swung in hammocks & climbed trees
🫧 Chased giant bubbles
😂 Laughed, played & made new friends!
And, of course, we’ve sent everyone home with messy hair, blackberry-stained faces, grubby hands and huge smiles! 😆🫐🖐️

It’s been an absolute BLAST! 💚

🌿🍓 Channelling a Bramley Hedge, Oakapple Wood kind of summer… 🍓🌿

The kind of summer where the days aren’t packed with plans, activities and endless entertainment…

They’re filled with little adventures. 🐞🌼
Paddling in streams 💦
Pond dipping 🐸
Collecting stones and shells 🪨
Picking berries 🍓🫐
Making art out of nature 🌿🎨
Climbing trees 🌳
Building dens 🪵
Swimming in lakes 🏊‍♀️
Watching butterflies 🦋
Lying in the grass and cloud watching ☁️
Coming home muddy, barefoot and tired from a day spent outside. 🌱🤎

✨ The simple things really are the best.
Children don't need every minute filled with organised entertainment. They need time. Time to wander, explore, get curious, make things, get muddy, use their imagination and simply be. 🌿

Maybe childhood doesn't need to be bigger, busier or more exciting…

Maybe it just needs to be slower, simpler and a little more wild. 🤎🌿

Here’s to long summer days, muddy knees, wild imaginations and the magic of the ordinary. ☀️🧺🌼

Wildcraft Warriors have been having an EPIC time! 🪵🪶🌳

We’ve had a fantastic couple of days here at Boots & Brambles Forest School for our Wildcraft Warriors Holiday Clubs🌟at Boots & Brambles Forest School

And WOW… the woods have definitely been the BEST place to be in this heat! 🌳☀️🌿

Our Wildcraft Warriors have been:
🔎 Hunting through the woods for natural resources
🪙 Trading their finds in our woodland market
🏕️ Building dens… then putting them to the ultimate waterproofness test! 💦😂
🪚 Using tools to create their own amazing inventions — from swords & spears ⚔️ to WORKING PENCILS! ✏️🤯
🪵 Setting up their own Trading Posts to trade woodland items!
🌿 Chilling out in hammocks
🫧 Making giant bubbles
🍦 Enjoying ice pops under the cool woodland canopy

There’s been plenty of creativity, adventure, teamwork, problem-solving and, of course, lots of fun! 💚🌳🙌

A HUGE thank you to everyone who joined us this week — you’ve made it such a brilliant few days! 🥰💚
