Meet the Team— Rob- Weaving Manager

As the key link between the loom floor and the wider production team, Rob’s role is all about protecting quality, maintaining consistency and keeping the rhythm of weaving running smoothly. Overseeing day‑to‑day loom performance, he works closely with our weaving team to ensure every machine is running at its best — identifying issues early, resolving them quickly and keeping production moving with precision.

With years of hands‑on experience and a sharp technical eye, Rob brings a calm, steady presence to a fast‑paced environment. His ability to troubleshoot, guide and support the team is central to safeguarding the high standards our fabrics are known for — from the very first picks on the loom to the final metres of finished cloth.

It’s skilled, reactive work that blends craftsmanship with deep technical knowledge, and Rob brings both in abundance. We’re proud to highlight the people whose expertise shapes the fabric of Marton Mills every single day.

Today we’re taking a closer look at another essential stage in preparing every warp: winding.

Winding is where each yarn begins its journey toward the loom. Cones are wound with care to ensure every end has the correct tension, length and consistency before it reaches the creel. This step might look simple, but it’s crucial — even the smallest variation here can affect how smoothly the warp runs later on.

Here you can see Marcus carefully preparing the cones with precision, he ensures the yarn feeds forward cleanly through the warping creel

It’s a quiet but vital part of the process — the foundation of a stable, reliable warp and the first step in creating the clarity and consistency you see in every Marton Mills fabric.

As customers look for pieces that work across seasons, lambswool continues to stand out — offering softness, breathability and a refined drape without ever compromising durability.

Our Galloway Collection, including the beautifully understated Galloway Oat, is designed to slip effortlessly into modern wardrobes. These classic plain neutrals pair seamlessly with relaxed or structured silhouettes, making lambswool a natural choice for transitional layers and contemporary tailoring.

From the inspiration behind Galloway to how designers are using lambswool for gilets, shackets and overshirts, we’re seeing a shift toward comfort, versatility and long‑lasting craftsmanship. And with bespoke colours available through our work with Gledhill’s, the possibilities for custom development are endless.

There’s a reason lambswool remains one of the most cherished fibres in textile design — and we’ve explored it in depth.

Here’s another bespoke project we created for Gurteen last year — a contemporary twist on a traditional windowpane tweed. Working closely with their team, we developed a check that feels familiar yet distinctly their own, blending heritage with a modern, refined colour story.

It’s always a pleasure to design fabrics that capture a brand’s identity whilst introducing something new.

Today we’re taking a closer look at one of the most important parts of our warping process: the creel.

The warping creel is where every warp begins. Hundreds of yarn cones are set into place, each positioned with care to follow the exact colour order and sequence of the design. As the yarns feed forward under controlled tension, the creel ensures every end runs smoothly, evenly and in perfect alignment.

Whether we’re preparing a bold check, a subtle stripe or a plain warp, the creel is the foundation that keeps patterns accurate and colour placement precise. It’s a blend of engineering and craftsmanship — quietly essential to the quality and consistency of every fabric woven here at Marton Mills.

After sharing the beautiful blazer crafted in our CGE339 Blithfield Tweed, we’re taking you behind the scenes to show how this vibrant check begins its journey on the loom.

Warping is the first stage in creating Blithfield — where hundreds of individual wool ends are aligned with absolute precision. Each colour in the check is carefully arranged on the creel, following a detailed warp plan that brings the pattern to life long before weaving begins.

As the yarns are drawn through the reed and wound onto the beam, the structure of Blithfield starts to emerge: those signature pops of colour, the balanced spacing to form the check that makes this tweed so distinctive.
