What Makes British Wool Truly Unique

British wool isn’t just a fibre — it’s a story of landscape, heritage and remarkable natural diversity.

Across Britain, we’re home to around 60 native sheep breeds, the greatest variety anywhere in the world. Our patchwork of climates, coastlines and uplands has shaped wool with distinct character and each breed offers something different.

This incredible breadth is exactly what we wanted to celebrate in the British Wool Collection. In our Ingleton range, many fabrics are left undyed, using only the natural shades of British fleece. These tonal shifts, flecks and subtle variations create beautifully textured cloth that feels deeply connected to the landscapes the wool comes from. It’s authenticity you can see and feel.

The British Wool Collection launches this July.

Meet the Team — Will - Logistics Manager

Today we’re spotlighting the person who makes sure every metre of Marton Mills fabric reaches exactly where it needs to be — Will, our Logistics Manager.

If you’ve ever received fabric from us, Will has had a hand in making sure it reached you safely. He’s the person who leads the team behind the scenes checking every roll, planning every dispatch and keeping track of where each metre needs to go.

He knows how much our customers rely on timely deliveries, and he goes the extra mile to make sure everything is packed properly, documented clearly and sent on its way without a hitch. Whether he’s coordinating a complex international shipment or helping a colleague find a last‑minute solution, he brings a calm, steady presence to the busiest parts of the day.

Logistics is a crucial part of our operation, and Will’s professionalism plays a key role in keeping everything moving.

Introducing Wooltrace by Laxtons

At Marton Mills, we understand the need for authenticity and transparency in the modern textile industry.

The bright colours of our Brimham quality not only bring visual vibrancy to our collection, but are also fully traceable back to the farms that produced the wool in each cloth.

Certified by British Wool, this farm traceability scheme provides complete assurance of provenance, authenticity and true sustainability. These farmers also receive a premium top up payment for their wool over and above the auction price.

Introducing - Brimham

A vibrant evolution of Leathley, our new quality Brimham provides a fresh perspective on British wool.

Named after the sculptural rocks of Brimham, the collection is inspired by the dynamic climbing routes that weave across them. Building on the tones of Leathley, Brimham introduces bold colours to give the cloth a contemporary and energetic edge.

These bright shades are fully farm traceable, allowing you to see the British farmers behind your cloth. Brimham celebrates both joyful expression and the farmers behind the wool.

Ingleton turns British wool into a statement - bold, modern and unmistakably rooted in the landscape that shaped it.

Ingleton is a fabric that feels completely at one with the elements. The collection uses predominantly undyed yarns, punctuated with flashes of timeless colours woven throughout. Overscaled patterns and textures echo the dramatic and cavernous landscapes that inspired its name.

Meet the Team — Rob - Overlooker

Today we’re shining a spotlight on one of the people who plays a vital role in keeping Marton Mills running smoothly — Rob, our Overlooker.

As the link between the loom floor and the wider production team, Rob’s role is all about maintaining quality, consistency and momentum. Overseeing day‑to‑day weaving operations, he keeps a close eye on loom performance, supports the weaving team and ensures any issues are identified and resolved quickly to keep production flowing.

With a sharp technical eye and years of hands‑on experience, Rob brings a calm, steady presence to a fast‑moving environment. His ability to troubleshoot, guide and support the team helps safeguard the high standards our fabrics are known for — from the first picks on the loom to the final metres of cloth.

It’s skilled, reactive work that relies on craftsmanship as much as technical knowledge, and Rob brings both in abundance. We’re proud to highlight the people whose expertise shapes the fabric of Marton Mills every single day.

Our Leathley collection celebrates the beauty of British wool with classic staple designs, using undyed browns and muted greys that echo the Yorkshire landscape where the cloth is created.

Crafted using wool sourced and produced within a 50‑mile radius of our mill and finishers, Leathley carries the lowest carbon footprint of all our fabrics. A blend of the lustrous Bluefaced Leicester and the hardy Masham, this beautifully soft fabric redefines what British wool can be.

Naturally versatile, Leathley is woven to last, rooted in tradition yet perfectly suited to modern life.

Here is a behind‑the‑scenes look at one of our yarn suppliers — Knoll Yarns.

Knoll’s Heritage and Heritage Heather ranges play a key role within our upcoming Ingleton Collection, bringing depth, texture and true British provenance to every design.

These yarns are dyed, spun and crafted here in the UK, using the beautiful fleeces of British‑born and bred sheep. Their natural character and tonal richness help shape the bold, landscape‑inspired aesthetic of Ingleton — a collection we’re excited to share with you very soon.

We’re excited to share that the new Marton Mills website is now live!

Designed to better reflect who we are today — a modern, independent Yorkshire mill with a strong heritage and a commitment to quality — the new site brings together our fabrics, story and capabilities in a clearer, more accessible way.

We are also thrilled to introduce one of our most exciting tools yet, The Garment Preview. This new feature allows you to visualise any of our cloths as a finished garment, giving designers, brands and makers a clearer sense of how a fabric will drape, scale and come to life in real use. From tailoring to outerwear, it offers a more intuitive way to explore our collections and make confident design decisions.

You’ll find improved navigation, updated product information, a refreshed look and feel, and a more streamlined experience whether you’re exploring our collections or learning more about the mill. It’s been built to support our customers, showcase our extensive fabric catalogue and make it easier than ever to discover what we do.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing this project to life. We’re proud of the result and excited for this next step in sharing the Marton Mills story.
