A few snippets from our very first live last night 😂

Welcome to our very first Handpicked Live!

Grab a cuppa, get comfy and spend the evening with us as we bring a little bit of the shop to you. We'll be sharing our latest arrivals, styling ideas, try-ons, favourite finds and everything else that makes Handpicked what it is.

We'll also be chatting about life in the shop, celebrating other wonderful local independent businesses and, knowing us, probably going off on the odd tangent too!

Join us for our very first Handpicked Live Shopping Event!

We’ve been busy creating a beautiful little space away from the shop floor, especially for our lives, so we can bring Handpicked straight to you in the comfort of your own home.

Watch from your phone, tablet or desktop through our website, or tune in through our social platforms.

We’ll be there showing you some of the latest pieces to hit our rails, trying things on, answering your questions, chatting away and, because it’s our very first one, we’ll even throw in a few little giveaways along the way!

And don’t worry if you can’t make it live. Each event will be recorded so you can watch it back afterwards, and going forward we’ll stagger the days and times so hopefully everyone gets a chance to join us live at some point.

AUTUMN SELLING 🍂

Selling appointments are back and LIVE on the website ready to be booked!

But before you head off to grab an appointment let me run through how selling with Handpicked works and a few things we’ve learnt along the way. (Sorry it’s a long one)

We’re now going into our fifth year of Handpicked which feels slightly bonkers to even write. Over those years we’ve learnt so much about what works for us. What sells. What our customers come back for. How much stock we can realistically handle. And most importantly how we keep beautiful pieces flowing through the shop without becoming completely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of clothing that comes through our doors.

This last season has genuinely been our best yet and a big part of that has been changing the way our selling appointments work. Everyone now needs an appointment and we no longer accept walk ins. We have one team member dedicated to running the appointments that day which means the rest of the shop can carry on as normal while they give your items their full attention.

We’ve also refined even further what Handpicked is about.

For us it’s everyday wear. Great casual pieces that you can actually live in and reach for again and again. We don’t do occasion wear and we probably never will. Heels and hats just aren’t our thing. We favour lovely natural fabrics and styles that feel current. We look for pieces that have been well made with care and thought behind them and that still have plenty of life ahead.

And when I say we see a lot of clothes I honestly mean A LOT.

It can be quite overwhelming which is why we ask you to bring your clothing freshly washed and neatly folded in one bag. When you arrive the team member hosting your appointment will have a quick chat with you and answer any questions before asking you to have a wander around the shop while they go through everything.

Honestly we LOVE a chat. You know we do 😂 But it is really difficult to properly look at stitching and fabrics and condition and think about what we already have in the shop while someone is standing watching us. Giving us that little bit of space means we can properly concentrate on your things and make the best selections.

So what exactly are we looking for?

This is where it gets tricky because the answer can genuinely change from one appointment to the next. If we’ve already taken in lots of a particular size or style that week we might not take another. We never want the rails overwhelmed with lots of similar things. So if we say no to something it doesn’t necessarily mean there is anything wrong with it. It might simply not be what we need at that moment.

Which brings me nicely onto probably our most asked question.

What brands do you take?

And it’s the one I can never give you a simple list for.

I can tell you that we don’t take fast fashion brands or supermarket clothing or cheap boutique pieces. But beyond that we look at the actual item in front of us. The fabric. The cut. The quality. The condition. How current it feels. Whether we think our customers will love it and whether it fills a gap we currently have in the shop.

I’ve had a few messages recently saying things like “I’ve seen Zara on your website so do you take Zara?” and this is a really good example. If you bring us a whole bag made up of brands like Zara we’re probably going to say no. But a brilliant Zara piece mixed amongst a lovely collection of better quality brands can absolutely earn its place on the rail. We love seeing an interesting mix of brands and styles and finding those standout pieces amongst them.

If your wardrobe is mainly made up of lower end high street brands though we might simply not be the right place for you to sell. And that’s okay. We know what works here and being selective is a huge part of why Handpicked feels the way it does.

And I think it’s worth talking about what we actually mean when we say quality because it isn’t just about the name sewn into the neck.

We look at stitching. We look at how patterns line up. We feel the fabric. We notice buttons and finishes and construction. We look at how something has worn already and think about how it is likely to wear in the future. We want pieces that someone can buy from us and genuinely enjoy wearing again and again. Pieces that we feel have been made with intention and deserve to stay in someone’s wardrobe for years rather than months.

And finally our biggest sticking point.

Please wash your clothes. Freshly.

Everything you bring needs to have been freshly washed before your appointment unless it is genuinely new with tags. We steam and handle every piece and we can tell when something has been worn and not washed or has been sitting in storage for a while. A quick freshen up or spritz isn’t the same thing.

We want someone to be able to find something brilliant at Handpicked take it home and wear it. That standard is really important to us and it’s one we won’t compromise on.

So there we go. Written down it probably sounds like we have approximately 972 rules 😂 but every single one of them exists because we’ve learnt what makes this work.

We want Handpicked to be somewhere you can shop preloved differently. Somewhere you can walk through the door with confidence knowing we’ve already done the sorting checking and selecting for you. Somewhere filled with genuinely great clothes rather than simply lots of clothes.

And we can only do that because we have so many fabulous sellers who completely get what we’re trying to create here.
