It’s a big red flag 🚩

I’m saying NO to AI.

AI is a system built on theft. It literally creates “new” images based on patterns and existing designs. It takes jobs away from real human artists and designers, and it takes the soul out of creativity. Plus, it’s terrible for the environment.

If you want a change making to one of my designs, please, I beg you, sent me a doodle, or just write a description what you want. I guarantee I will understand it and create something better than ChatGPT will.

But please, stop uploading my art work to AI.

The 3 images I’ve added are genuine images sent to us by people wanting custom designs or changes to my existing work. I find it scary how much closer it’s getting to replicating my style each time.

Support artists, not machines.

Week 3 of using instagram to share real life honest content from my small business life.

I’m done with curated, fake, pretty pastel lies. Here are some of the real things that made up my week last week:

Last week was a week of technology woes.

Laser cutter is not rescue-able, so had to order a new one. Ouch.

Windows updates angered our grumpy computers last week, so I spent a day pandering to them, nursing them and pleading with them to stop sulking. Thankfully, they did eventually oblige.

Our main printer also started playing up- is it mercury retrograde or something?!? Ordered a new printer too. Double ouch.

Oh, and then we needed to order ALLLLLLL the materials (except greyboard- see last week’s post for more on greyboard).

My business bank card is currently curled up in a ball crying under a desk. If you’d like to help coax it out and offer it some comfort, feel free to place any large (or small) orders on our website 😂

On a more positive side, I did finally order our 2027 hardcover diaries which I am SO excited to see! 🙌

We attach a folded paper insert to every laser cut card, and your writing goes in the inside of the paper insert. Also, the paper is super high quality so you can’t see any pen through the paper either.

My uninteresting, unfiltered, real life this week.

It’s been a pretty tough week in small business owner land- we’ve had laser cutter issues, storage problems and, in true Emma-style, it’s been one of our busiest weeks in years so of course I’ve had to take time out to go to physio and get my car fixed 🤦‍♀️

But in more positive news, I’ve almost finished working on our brand new 2027 diary, and I’m SO excited to share it with you! I’ve created every page myself, so it’s got exactly what I want on it, because I find that the generic pre-made versions are never quite right. Oh, and it’s really pretty!

18 years of experimenting and failing and trying again.

Our product photography has been a journey, to say the least, but I think I’ve finally found something that almost resembles something that works.

This is the problem with running a small business- we can’t just employ a photographer or marketing team, so I have had to learn by doing (and failing)

I’m looking for real people to follow. I want real life behind the scenes content, messy, non-aesthetic work spaces, imperfect work in progress shots, unfiltered real human people doing real human things, and let’s not forget cute pics of dogs.

I’m bored of pretending to be a big brand and post curated, professionally-shot content.

I’m a real person making real art, I don’t have a huge marketing budget, investors, photography department or perfectly pastel pretty workspace.

My desk has doom piles.
My studio is not beautifully decorated.

That’s why.

As a maker, it can feel like a bit of a kick in the teeth when people say things like this.

Sure, you could get a card for 25p when you pick up your groceries.

But, let’s face it- it’s not gonna win any awards for the most thoughtful gesture. It ain’t gonna be remembered (or kept) past the event, and it definitely doesn’t scream “I put lots of thought and effort into to choosing the perfect card for you”

Don’t get me wrong, the cheaper cards can sometimes have their place, but if it’s one of your most favourite people and they are celebrating a big moment- that’s what our cards are for.
