Technical post - the considerations of a Weaver
When weaving, like knitting, you need the correct gauge. Preparing to weave a tartan wrap with a new to me yarn (2/30nm extra fine merino) I set out to find the ‘sett’. Firstly I made a yarn wrap. The wrap showed I needed 36 threads for one inch - known as 36wpi. Tartan is woven as a 2/2 twill (over 2, under 2) and is typically set at 2/3rds of the WPI = 24 ends per inch (epi). I warped the loom and set to weaving. 347 threads was 11 1/2 inches wide, but the squares are rectangles and the weft (crossways threads) are covering up the warp (up and down threads) - not good! I cut the sample off and resleyed to 28epi. Still the same 347 threads but more threads per inch making it narrower - but still rectangles! I cut it off and resleyed at 32epi. The story was the same. Cut off, resleyed at 36epi. The original 11 1/2 inches wide sample is now down to 8 inches wide, all in the search of perfection! Just to cover all the bases I then resleyed to 40epi. Definitely getting squares now, but the feel of the fabric is too firm for a nice flowing scarf. I think I’m going to weave the wraps at 36epi, which will be 864 threads for 24” wide Colourmart
