October Meet-Up

We had a great meet-up yesterday with 28 members in attendance.

A wide variety of projects were being worked on during the stitch and chat and some of the members took the opportunity to learn how to do raised leaves at our stitch table.

Our guest speaker, James Donald gave an interesting and entertaining talk about his journey from studying at art & design college, travelling to various parts of the world, setting up his company PickOne and developing his teaching practice. James happily answered the many questions our members put to him. After the talk everyone had the chance to look more closely at the various items he had brought along, including some of his sketchbooks.

Monthly Get Together

Our next monthly catch up is this Saturday, 10th October, at Oakbank Community Centre with the stitch and chat session starting at 12 noon.

From 2pm our speaker, James Donald, will give a talk about – Adventures in Warp + Weft: A PickOne Story

Weaver and owner of PickOne Studios, James Donald has been weaving since 1997, and in this talk he shares how his practice has grown into a vibrant and established part of the creative landscape in Edinburgh and beyond. James will share his personal creative journey, guiding you through the different eras of his practice and reflecting on how both his work and the studios have evolved over time. He’ll speak about the exciting growth in workshops and classes, particularly the surge in interest and community following lockdown, and how this momentum has shaped the studio today. This tactile, visually illustrated presentation will offer plenty of inspiration, with opportunities to ask questions throughout and afterwards. Members will also have the chance to purchase selected pieces on the day. An insightful, creative, and welcoming event not to be missed.

Textiles at the Tolbooth features 6 talented textile artists. On from 28th September to 10th October in Lanark. It is definitely worth visiting.

RSPB are running their Pagham Harbour Mini Quilt Competition again. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in quilting to get involved.

All the information needed to take part is on the flyer, including a QR code for quick and easy entry. The closing date for entries is 28 March 2027.

The finished mini quilts will be displayed at RSPB Pagham Harbour and visitors will once again be able to choose their favourite for the People’s Choice Award.

Beyond the Bedspread: journeys in fabric and stitch

Discover the remarkable textile work of Sheena Norquay, whose richly detailed quilts bring together fabric, thread, painting and printmaking to explore landscape, nature and storytelling.

Inspired by the coastlines and landscapes of Orkney, as well as Norse mythology and the traditions of quilt-making, Sheena’s work is filled with colour, texture, pattern and intricate detail. From rolling seas and sweeping shorelines to shells, stones and hidden symbols, her quilts reward a closer look, revealing new details the longer you spend with them.

This exhibition brings together a carefully selected collection of Sheena’s work, offering visitors the opportunity to explore just a small part of an extraordinary career in textile art.

Our 26/27 Programme has kicked off on Saturday with a great talk from Amy Reid Perthshire Wool at our first meet back on 12 September. Amy shared all about their local sheep farm, how they use every part of the wool fleeces, getting it spun into yarn, which Amy then dyes herself using the plant dyes she grows, which are nourished by their new Fertifleece wool fertiliser pellets made on the farm using the waste wool that doesn't make the grade for yarn. Also hearing about the Rooted Textiles Festival which Amy runs at Madderty Hall, a celebration of natural fibres for textiles, and is coming up on Sunday 4 October.

We also enjoyed being back for Stitch ‘n’ Chat, having the opportunity to share and learn stitches of interest, and seeing some of the lovey calico puff designs that members have created over the summer break.
