Why aren’t all varifocal lenses the same? 👓

Two pairs of glasses can have exactly the same prescription and yet the lenses can perform very differently.

That’s because a varifocal isn’t simply a prescription placed into a piece of lens material. The design of the lens determines how the different areas of vision are positioned and how smoothly you can move between distance, intermediate and reading.

And that’s where things get interesting.

Some varifocals use a more basic, standardised design. Others can be personally designed around the wearer, taking into account things like the frame, how you use your glasses and the distances you need to see comfortably.

Someone who spends most of their day driving has very different visual demands to someone working at a computer. Someone who is constantly switching between a phone, paperwork and the room around them has different requirements again.

So when choosing varifocals, it isn't necessarily about finding the most expensive lens.

It’s about finding a lens design that makes sense for you.
