One has been busy shopping!

And my favourite today has to be a ship that I served on, HMS Beaver!

This is a 50cm high carved wooden master for the bridge badge off the Broadsword-class frigate “HMS Beaver” by Messrs Martyns of Cheltenham. After design drawings, wooden masters were made for reverse sand casting of the bronze versions of the badge. The wooden masters were then lacquered and displayed in the Camel Laird Museum.

Next up….

Superb Used Ceremonial Parade Flagstaff, Union Jack & Leather Pole Holder

This two part tasseled mahogany flagstaff with chromed spearhead, is in good used condition with the odd imperfection commensurate with its age & use. It’s currently fitted with a sewn panelled cotton union flag or jack, and comes with a leather pole holder for marching and a storage bag. The pole when screwed together, measures 230cm long with the removable flag measuring 114cm x 80cm.

Vintage Royal Navy HMS Mersey Minesweeper Solid Brass Badge c.1950-70’s

HMS Mersey was the name borne by a number of tenders to the Mersey Division Royal Naval Reserve
HM Motor minesweeper 1075 was HMS Mersey between 1949 - 1956 and two Ton-class minesweepers bearing the name HMS Mersey also served as tenders to the Mersey Division, which included HMS Amerton (M1105) between 1954 - 1959 & HMS Pollington (M1173) between 1959 and 1975.

The solid brass painted Mersey badge is in fine fettle and has some age and used patina to the surface, It’s nicely presented on mahogany and measures 7” x 5”.

1st up this evening & by popular demand, is this……

Fantastic Large Solid Brass Royal Navy Twin Dolphin Mounted Ceremonial Toast Bell.

Fresh from the M&K workshop, is this superb RN wardroom twin dolphin framed dinner or rum/port toast bell.
The 7” x 6.5” flared bell with clanger, swings between the mythical leviathan’s and is mounted on a mahogany base which sits on brass bun feet, overall its stands 18”H x 16.5”W x 9.5”D. It has a solid brass engraved cartouche to the brass base which reads “Splice the Mainbrace” and “God Save the Queen”.
This came to us in several parts and so we’ve given it a good clean, removing years of Brasso, spent hours giving it a polish and finally reassembling it, to produce this rather wonderful feast for the eyes.
We are not entirely sure which Royal Navy ship, establishment or RN club or association this has previously graced but it’s crying out for a new nautical home.

Now this is my favourite find this week…..

Superb Rare Napoleonic War British Army Rumlet or Rum Issue Barrel. c.1810

A "rumlet" (or rundlet) is an archaic term for a small, wooden staved barrel used by the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars to transport and distribute the daily rum ration to soldiers in the field, serving as a vital gratuity to boost morale and cope with the stress of combat

This particular metal-bound oak canteen/keg is in good used condition with a fabulous worn patina. The interior still smells of the rich sugary amber nectar and overall, it measures 7.5” x 8” in diameter. One end is embossed with the initials “RTD”, which often stands for “Ready to Drink” and two broad-arrow’s, the metalwork also includes the original forged iron handle and has an original cork fitted.

Fantastic find!

Whilst I’m on the subject of ships bells, here’s another…..

Rare WW1 Royal Navy Destroyer HMS Doon Bronze Commissioning Bell d.1905

HMS Doon was a River Class Destroyer built for the RN by R.W. Hawthorn Leslie and Company of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, commissioned in 1905.
After work-up, Doon, who was named after the River Doon in Western Scotland, was assigned to the East Coast Destroyer Flotilla of the 1st Fleet and based at Harwich. After a brief refit in 1908, she joined the Channel Fleet destroyer Flotilla and on the night of 2/3 March 1909, Doon, which had set off from Portland Harbour with the destroyer Fawn to es**rt the Royal yacht Alexandra from Dover to Calais, collided with the steam trawler Halcyon. The trawler sank, with all of her crew rescued by Doon, with Doon's bow badly damaged, forcing her to put into Portsmouth for repair. (See photo)
With the onset of WW1, she joined the 9th Destroyer Flotilla based at Chatham tendered to HMS St George, the 9th was a Patrol Flotilla tasked with anti-submarine and counter mining patrols in the Firth of Forth area.

On 16 December 1914, under command of Lieutenant-Commander H. McLeod-Fraser, RN, as the flotilla leader, along with HMS Waveney, HMS Test and HMS Moy were sent to patrol off Hartlepool. During the German Raid on Hartlepool, she was damaged by shellfire after being straddled by three salvoes, with one near miss by an 11-inch shell grazing the after edge of the foremost funnel, damaging a Berthon collapsible lifeboat, before going overboard, she also suffered splinter damage and had her wireless, aft gun and torpedo tube put out of action, sadly with the loss of three and six wounded crew members.

After repairs, in August 1915, the 9th and 7th Flotillas were amalgamated and she was deployed to the 7th Destroyer Flotilla based at the River Humber, where she remained employed on the Humber Patrol, participating in counter mining operations and anti-submarine patrols for the remainder of the war.
In 1919 she was paid off and laid up in reserve awaiting disposal, eventually she was sold to Thos. W. Ward of Sheffield for breaking.

The heavy bronze bell measures 12” H with a 12” Flare, has the ships name “HMS Doon” and commissioning date of “1905” engraved to the front and has its original clanger and suspension shackle.

This was the only RN ship to be given this name, so this is a rare naval artefact!

1st up tonight, is this superb…..

WW2 Admiralty/Royal Navy MFV 601 Class Ships Bell & Hanger (MFV 636)

Motor Fishing Vessel (MFV) 636 was a Royal Navy Inshore vessel built by the ship builders “Charles Pearson of Hull”, commissioned in 1944 and fitted with a 303” AA machine gun.
These plucky armed tenders, would have been used for harbour defence, inshore patrols and ferrying & supplying services in naval ports.

The 7” H bell is in freshly polished refurbished condition and has a 7” flare, it has a good used patina and comes with its original hanger, clanger and bell rope.
