Medal Monday 🎖

Awarded for courage under fire, the Military Medal recognised acts of bravery by non-commissioned officers and other ranks of the British Army and, later, members of the Royal Air Force.

Instituted in 1916 during the First World War, it was created to recognise the extraordinary gallantry shown by ordinary soldiers in extraordinary circumstances.
Over 115,000 Military Medals were awarded, with many recipients earning Bars for further acts of bravery—an incredibly rare distinction.

Do you have a Military Medal in your family, or know the story behind one? I'd love to hear about it in the comments.

Medal Monday 🎖️

The Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal was created to mark Her Majesty’s coronation on 2 June 1953. Unlike campaign medals, it wasn’t awarded for military service but presented as a personal commemorative gift from the Queen to those chosen to represent the nation and Commonwealth.

Only around 129,000 medals were issued across the Commonwealth, making it a relatively scarce award.

King Charles was a 4 year old prince when he received his medal. Some other notable recipients included Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, whose successful ascent of Mount Everest came just days before the Coronation.

Do you have a Coronation Medal in your family collection? I’d love to hear its story.

Medal Monday 🎖

This week the General Service Medal (GSM) 1962 - 2007. It isn't linked to one campaign—it was awarded across many operations. Rather than issuing a new medal for every campaign, each operation was recognised with its own clasp, creating a medal that tells the unique story of an individual's service. With 14 different clasps covering campaigns from Borneo and Northern Ireland to the Gulf, Iraq and Cyprus.

If there's a medal you'd like to know more about, let me know in the comments.
