Portrush parkrun

Portrush parkrun Portrush parkrun is a FREE weekly 5KM event for runners of all standards. Every Saturday morning at 09:30 at East Strand Beach Portrush BT56 8AD.

Started 8th September 2012. Weekly forecast: https://portrushpark.run/ parkrun is not a race against other runners, but a 5k timed run and it can really be whatever you want it to be, whether that's for fun or as part of a training plan. It offers an opportunity for all the local community, male or female, young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy this beautiful beach setting and

get physically active into the bargain. We want to encourage people to jog or run together irrespective of their ability – this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE! Taking part is easy – just register before your first ever parkrun at www.parkrun.com and print off your barcode. The great thing is that you only ever need to do this once! Then just set your alarm for Saturday morning and get yourself there! After the run, if you don’t have to get off straight away, there will be the chance to socialise with everyone at 55 Degrees North Cafe or Arcadia Beach Cafe, who both offer a discount to all parkrunners; to maybe swap stories about your run that day, chat to other runners over a cup of tea or coffee and just be an important part of this new running community. So whether you are a complete novice looking to get yourself started on your own "running journey" or a seasoned athlete wanting to use this as a part of your training schedule, you’re welcome to come along and join us.

Remember that it's usually colder standing at the finish line than running, so dress to stay warm & dry 😉

**Dog Control Order - East Strand & White Rocks**

From 1st June – 15th September annually, Dog Control Orders apply to our start / finish area on East Strand beach and our turning point on White Rocks beach. The dog-free area at East Strand extends from the stream (estuary) westwards to the promenade leading to the Arcadia (the beach area in front of the Watersports Centre is included). At White Rocks dogs are not permitted to be on the section of beach from the main pedestrian entrance eastwards towards Dunluce Castle.

Attached image and link below highlight the restricted areas at both beaches.

https://www.causewaycoastandglens.gov.uk/live/health-and-built-environment/licensing/dog-licensing/dog-control-in-public-spaces

The council has seasonal beach rangers during July and August, from 10am – 6pm daily. One of their duties is to oversee these restrictions and advise dog walkers accordingly.

Council’s Environmental Wardens also carry out patrols and they have the legal authority to issue penalty fines to dog owners who don’t comply with the restrictions.

Unfortunately that means Juno, Ruby and Mac, our core team doggies can’t make it to Portrush for a few months but we will look forward to them returning in September. We respectfully request that all of our walkers and runners also comply with the council’s restrictions.

Many thanks
Faye

We were missing sunshine today, but the drizzle didn’t dampen the spirits of our 236 finishers (well done) and our 18 volunteers (thank you).
Celebrating milestones today were:
250: Maurice Walker 💚
50: Jason Allen ❤️
10: Timothy Lewis
A special milestone for our RD Alan Taggart who has now volunteered 100 times! And uniquely this includes him piping us over the line on New Year’s Day and Burn’s Day. He is also rumoured to have close links with Santa but as they’ve never been seen together this can’t be verified… Thanks for all you do for us Alan!

Results are up - email [email protected] if any issues.

See you next week!

Thanks to Gary for this week's run report 👏
(For clarity, photo is not of Gary!😆) Claire

343 completed event 658 in near perfect conditions. The sandy surface was good to firm, as they say in horse racing circles. The weather was dry and sunny. The erratic estuary was little more than a large puddle this week. Of course a sea breeze was present (no change there), but it perhaps prevented us from getting hot and sticky.

Lots of people descended upon us from all corners of the globe. They're too numerous to mention. In our early days, Andy used to ask "is there anyone here from any other parkruns?" If Mervyn did that today, we wouldn't have started until about 9.45.

Amongst others, we had some Scottish 'hens'. D'you ken?

There was a number of milestones too:
Cath Coey 250 (248 at Portrush!)
Simeon Cathcart 200 and a sub-19 finish!
visitor Clare Lavery 150
visitor Sophie Armstrong 25
visitor Kathryn Scott 25

If anyone is completing a Portrush double of parkrun and then raft race participation, that's quite an achievement.

Finally, the scanners and timekeepers deserve about 340 thanks for their efforts. Oh and if you like parkrunning/walking or volunteering in May, you get a fifth one next Saturday.

Onwards and upwards
Gary Watton

Sorry for the delay - one scanner’s results didn’t go through but it’s rectified now.
Gary Watton will be providing an event report later - thanks to him and all the vols who got to stand in sunshine today! Yay!!
