A little bit of local history.

1. This framed maritime artwork is titled The Wreck of the Trevella at whitley bay.

British marine painter William John Baker (1865–1938), who frequently depicted dramatic coastal shipwrecks and scenes around the Northeast of England.

Subject: Depicts a masted sailing ship in distress breaking apart amongst rocky surf and turbulent seas.

The ship depicted in the painting, the Trevella, was a nineteenth-century British wooden merchant brig that met its end in a well-documented maritime disaster off the Northeast coast of England.

The VesselType: A wooden brig (a two-masted, square-rigged sailing vessel).

Trade: It operated primarily as a coastal collier and merchant ship, transporting heavy industrial goods like coal and timber along the stormy North Sea shipping routes.

On April 15, 1877, the Trevella was caught in a violent easterly gale while navigating the treacherous waters off the coast of Northumberland.

The Location: Blinded by the storm and fighting powerful waves, the brig was driven directly onto the jagged, shallow rocks known as the Whitley Sands Ledge, right off Whitley (now known as Whitley Bay).

Inscription: The lower mount is captioned clearly with the title and the artist's name in traditional script.
Framing: Presented in a wide, tiered metallic gold-toned frame with an inner cream mat border.

2. This framed marine watercolour is titled "The Wreck of the Alfonzo, Shields Beach" by British artist William John Baker (1865–1938).

Artwork Details: Depicts a masted sailing ship stranded on a sandy shore under a dramatic, cloudy sky with figures gathered nearby.

The Ship and its Final VoyageThe Vessel: The Alphonse was a 396-ton iron barquentine (a masted sailing ship) built in 1903.

The Cargo: It was transporting a load of silver sand from Flushing (Vlissingen) in the Netherlands to Grangemouth in Scotland.

The Incident at Shields BeachThe Gale: In 1910, the ship was caught in a fierce North Sea storm.

Powerful gale winds overpowered the vessel, driving it off course toward the treacherous Tyneside coastline.

The Grounding: The ship was driven past the pier and ran hard aground on the sands just north of Trow Rocks on South Shields Beach, breaking open and spilling its cargo of silver sand into the breakers.
