Today we are celebrating Potteries Bottle Oven Day with this wonderful image from the 1947 film Hands of the Potter, filmed at Wood & Sons Trent Wharf Pottery in Burslem.

Once numbering more than 2,000 before the Second World War, bottle ovens dominated Stoke-on-Trent’s skyline and stood at the heart of its world-famous pottery industry. Today, just 47 Grade II listed bottle ovens remain across 27 sites, serving as powerful reminders of the generations of skilled pottery workers and craftsmen who shaped The Potteries.
