When our lovely client came to see us, she'd had enough of rushed, one-size-fits-all eye care on the high street. Now retired, she wanted glasses that suited her life and matched her wardrobe.

Why are some glasses more expensive than others?

It's a fair question and the honest answer is more interesting than most people expect.

Most glasses sold in Britain come from a handful of very large factories. They're made competently, in enormous numbers, often by injection-moulding plastic into a shape. The name on the arm is usually a fashion house licensing its logo rather than anyone who designs or makes eyewear. There's nothing wrong with any of this if this is what you like.

The frames we stock are made differently. Acetate is a cotton-based material that comes in solid blocks, and the better makers cut each frame from the block and then tumble-polish it for days. That's why the colour has depth and movement in it rather than sitting flat on the surface. Titanium frames are cut and formed rather than cast, which is why they weigh almost nothing and still hold their shape.

Three things follow from that, and you notice all of them around hour twelve of wearing them rather than in the first five minutes.

1-They're lighter.
2-They're better balanced, so they stop sliding down.
3-And they hold an adjustment, which means the fit you walk out with is the fit you still have next spring.

The last part is the bit nobody mentions. A frame that holds its adjustment is a frame you forget you're wearing. That's what you're actually buying.

3 👓 frame 👓 mistakes that add ten years. We see all three every week.

1. Frames that are too small. Faces get fuller with age. Small frames make them look fuller still.

2. Rimless because it's "discreet." Rimless doesn't hide glasses. It removes the one thing that was framing and lifting your eyes.

3. The same shape you've worn since 1998. Your face has changed. The frame hasn't.
The fix isn't spending more. It's being shown the right six frames instead of the wrong three hundred.
