This is a personal post but an important one, a month or so ago my Mum gave me her sewing machine, she couldn’t see to thread the needle anymore and wanted me to pass it on to someone who might make more use of it.
She passed away very suddenly a couple of weeks ago, the last month has been very tough and it’s only been knowing I have the community I have been so fortunate to be accepted into at Kernow Recovery Community and the wonderful groups from Harbour Housing, Op Kernow and the Parent Carers coming to the workshop that’s kept me busy and surrounded by support
My mum first showed me how to use a sewing machine when I was 13, I thought it was dreadfully boring 😂 but I changed my mind when I worked out I could make outfits to wear clubbing a couple of years later.
My mum sewed out of necessity, she sewed all her own clothes, told me tales of buying kilts at jumble sales and unpicking them for their yardage, finishing an outfit every Thursday to go out Friday night, my Dad thought she was posh when they met because she always had something new on every weekend.
Then we arrived, 3 children and she made us dresses from the legs of bell bottom trousers and dungarees (and some absolute classics pictured here which I can only presume were from curtains 😂😂😂❤️).
Every September to December was Pantomine season and how none of ended up eating a pin I don’t know as metres of fabric and sequins and outfits would be pushed up the dining room table to allow us to sit and eat our tea between sewing sessions.
She was extremely proud of me taking up sewing self employed when my youngest son was born with Down Syndrome nearly 16 years ago and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to return to work.
She has been my biggest supporter and I know she will be very pleased that her machine has today had a dust (god knows what she’s done to the reverse button as that’s completely broke 😂😂😂😂) and it’s new custodian Dave, my trusty volunteer has made a new reversible cover for it and is going to carry on sewing up an absolute storm over the August break until we are all back together for more making of Epic S**t in September.
Thank you if you got this far and farewell to my Mum, where I got this all from ❤️❤️❤️❤️
