JM Bespoke Needlework

JM Bespoke Needlework I must have driven my Mum mad asking “Mummy, what can I make?”! And when time permits, I turn to tatting, bobbin lacemaking and cross-stitch.

My family have always said I was born with a pair of silver scissors in my hand - I’ve been on a mission to create masterpieces with

fabric and thread from such a young age. I gravitate towards any piece of fabric, to use, reuse, recycle or just ensure no scrap is wasted. Years of making my own clothes, soft furnishings, cuddly toys, fancy dress costumes, dresses for dolls….the list goes on. I’ve had the joy of making many ball gowns, wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, and bespoke outfits for grooms too. I love to preserve the life of fabric, furnishings and garments, be it by repair, restoration of alteration to ensure you'll get pleasure out of them for longer. And who can resist a beautifully hand crafted toy out of beautiful or treasured fabrics?

Taking the lead

These curtains now go with the roman blinds I posted about last week. The existing tartan leading and return edges had faded and perished, so they have had a lovely refresh to bring them up to date and pull the room together. The triple pinch pleat heading was adorned with matching buttons which I have replaced using an accent of navy blue linen.

The fabric is "Escorca Midnight" from Ashley Wilde.

Are you sitting comfortably?

This lovely seat cushion with removable cover had just gone home. Fabric choice is Toulouse Stripe Grey Double Width Fabric from Foy & Co Interiors.

The foam, from GB Foam Direct, was cut to size from a paper template. I put a long zip in the cover for ease of removal and ties to keep it on the seat. The fabric was washed before cutting so that my customer can wash again in the future without risk of shrinkage and I underlined the cushion cover with curtain lining which added a bit of stability.

I was delighted to be asked to work on this gorgeous gown for this year's Tulip Queen for the Mouton Chapel village parade which took place yesterday 😍

A new hem was required on the main chiffon layer, which measured 8 metres round, and two lining layers.

Midnight feast (for the eyes!)

I've just completed two roman blinds for a client's newly decorated kitchen and couldn't be more pleased with the way they look. The fabric chosen was "Escorca Midnight" from Ashley Wilde.

As well as making the blinds, I've made cushions and tie backs and will be putting new leading and return edges on some curtains which hang at another window. Watch this beautifully dressed space!

Going great guns with the cover stitch machine this morning.

I use this a lot for alterations/shortening hems of jersey garments, typically t-shirts and jogging bottoms.

Sewing tip alert!

Actually I just wanted an excuse to share this beautiful dress with you which is now the perfect length for my client, having lopped of 16cm all round! 😍😍😍

But... I wanted to show you Presser Foot B (for my Viking Husqvarna Opal) which has a little tunnel underneath to enable the turned edge of a hem to pass underneath without dragging 😊. I offset the needle and use the inner edge of the foot as a guide for stitching close to the edge.

Also pictured is my "clearance plate" aka "bulky seam adjuster" - essential to keep the presser foot balanced, especially when doing jeans hems! You can see I've stitched through it a couple of times! 😆🥹 Oopsie.

Snap!

I’ve really enjoyed making these replica trousers for a customer with her own unique style. Unable to find another pair just like her much-loved trousers, I made a pattern from the original garment in order that I could make a number of duplicates. And the results are delightful!

There has been subterfuge in the sewing room!

Unbeknown to their owner, I had a couple of items in for restoration and this week saw a very touching reveal. My client’s wife had such a surprise when she was led in to my studio – very confused 🤔 - to see her favourite coat had received an upgrade, and a precious pair of oven gloves had been rescued, my brief being to “keep them in use”. And she hadn't realised they had been missing!
