At Humphries Weaving, we weave silk walling to order, which means the colour, weight, and width can all be tailored precisely to your project. It brings a depth and warmth to a wall that paint simply cannot replicate, shifting subtly with the light throughout the day.

If silk walling is something you are considering for a project, we would be glad to talk you through the options.

Some a little different from our Damask and Brocatelle fabrics.

We were asked to recreate a ribbed fabric which was originally woven with silver thread, creating a beautiful rib. This fabric was worn in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century and would have shined beautifully in candle light.

Creating fabric for costume to bring this dress back to life was really exciting. The fabric had a subtle glistening and will look wonderful once it’s made up!

This photograph is from our archive at DeVere Mill, Castle Headingham, where Humphries Weaving found its home after outgrowing its original space at Ashburton Lodge. The high ceilings and generous proportions of the old school building allowed the Jacquard looms which Richard saved to be operational.

What started as a small operation grew into one of Britain's most respected silk weaving companies, going on to restore the State Apartments at Hampton Court, reupholster the State Gold Carriage for the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

This is our Campania damask, woven in a custom walnut colourway on one of our Jacquard looms.

The design is woven at 21 inches, historically correct in its width, though the colour here is entirely bespoke to the client's brief rather than drawn from a historic reference. It is a good example of how we work, taking the integrity of a traditional structure and adapting it to suit a bespoke fabric & scheme.

If you have a project that calls for something specific, we would be glad to talk it through.

Yesterday saw the launch of the book “The Weavers’ Trade” which forms part of the build up to the Weavers Company 900 years celebration in 2030.

The book itself celebrates the enduring vitality of the weaving industry, charting its evolution from medieval craft to modern manufacturing, including a chapter on Humphries Weaving.

It shows how centuries of skill, innovation, and adaptability – despite period of contraction and global competition – have kept weaving a living tradition rooted in quality, sustainability and creativity, and argues for its continued importance to Britain’s cultural identity and economic future.

We are thrilled to share this beautiful image of our 19th-century George and Mary design provided by a customer for a private home.
