Conservatory base going in? Sort the reinforcement before the pour.

For most conservatory slabs, reinforcement mesh is the go-to option, helping reduce cracking and support the concrete base.
But it needs to be placed properly with the right cover, support and preparation. Mesh left on the floor of the dig is decoration, not reinforcement. Harsh, but fair.

A raft foundation spreads the load of a structure across a reinforced concrete slab, rather than relying on traditional strip foundations.

For home extensions, the design may include a reinforced concrete raft, damp proof membrane, hardcore base and deeper/thickened edges around the perimeter.

The reinforcement can include mesh, loose bar, spacers and tying wire, depending on the engineer’s specification and site conditions.

The key point: the concrete does the compressive work, but the reinforcement helps control tension, movement and cracking where specified.

Small cracks can let water and contaminants into concrete, increasing the risk of reinforcement corrosion over time.
Self-healing concrete is designed to help seal microcracks before they become a bigger durability issue.
Very clever. Still not an excuse to ignore cover, placement, compaction or curing.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗱 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻? 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝗵.
Mesh choice depends on the slab thickness, ground conditions and what the pad is actually carrying.

A shed base, garden room, driveway and workshop slab can all need different reinforcement approaches, so “whatever mesh is cheapest” is not really a design method. Sadly.

Common mesh grades used on domestic concrete pads include A142, A193 and A252, but the right option should always match the job specification or engineer’s guidance.
