An extraordinary George II carved and gilt eagle console table in the manner of William Kent (1685 - 1748).

England, circa 1730s

One of the best pieces of furniture we’ve been lucky enough to own. Drawing on classical influences, encouraged by William Kent, tables like these were often referred to as ‘Roman’ tables and represented strength, power and authority. It was tacitly implied that, through association, the owner was educated in classical culture and belonged to society’s elite.

A pair of almost identical, though painted, console tables were installed in the Entrance Hall of Helen Coates Reed’s (nee Shedd) famous ‘Helen Shedd Reed House’ in Lake Bluff, Illinois. The architecture was carried out by David Adler and the interiors completed by his sister, Frances Elkins.

Just in: a beautiful iridescent ‘Olympia’ glass bottle vase by Loetz.

Bohemia, circa 1896

Provenance: The Estate of the late journalist Sabih Aykoler

My favourite type of Loetz glass, the ‘Olympia’ range has a wonderful simplicity - a pale green, matte iridescence that is bold yet totally understated.

Just in: A coromandel lacquer coffee table.

As was often the case with lacquer screens, the panels were incorporated into European-made furniture - both a way of salvaging part of a damaged screen, and also introducing some much sought after exoticism into the European interior. This lacquer top would have come from a Chinese screen dating to the late 17th century and the table itself is probably English, early 20th century.

Just in: An Anglo-Indian solid rosewood campaign cabinet.

Complete with integral painted iron safe, pigeonholes, writing slide with screw-in candle holder, letter racks, etc etc. Everything an officer would need on a campaign to write to his loved ones under candle light.

Just in: A pair of very fine Empire period prisoner of war straw-work portraits of Napoleon and his second wife Marie Louise of Austria.

France, circa 1810.

Most likely made in celebration of the marriage of Napoleon and his second wife Marie Louise of Austria in 1810, these straw-work panels were made by French prisoners of war and depict the newlyweds facing eachother on horseback, titled with their names beneath. Crafted with extraordinary skill in the finest straw marquetry.

Just in: a rich and seductive oil on canvas portrait of a lady by French artist Dabeau (b. 1947).

Two exhibitiosn of Dabeau’s work were held by renwoned gallerist Galerie Katia Granoff, Honfleur in 1997 and 2000. In these exhibitions, there was a clear theme in Dabeau’s work - inspired by the likes of Vouillard and Klimt, his arresting and seductive portraits of Chinese-inspired women were described as being depictions of icon-like, timeless figures who invite introspection rather than a narrative interpretation.

Galerie Katia Granoff was founded in the 1920s by Russian-born dealer and poet Katia Granoff. She was one of the first prominent female dealers in France and championed artists including Marc Chagall, Claude Monet, Othon Friesz, Chana Orloff, among others.

One of my all time favorite things - a rare stained oak Secessionist extendable dining table attributed to Josef Hoffmann (1870 - 1956).

Probably manufactured by cabinetmaker Josef Hrdonka.

Austria, circa 1915.

Provenance: Property of a private collection. By repute, once in the collection of Roberto Polo, Paris, 2003/04

Width when extended 220cm.

This table bears similarities to various Hoffmann designs of the same period. Most strikingly, however, to a large kitchen table designed by Hoffmann and executed by Josef Hrdonka, illustrated in Max Eisler, Österreichische Werkkultur, Vienna, 1916 (swipe to final image to see). Here the same distinctive, broad octagonal legs appear, only this time in a white lacquer finish.
