I wanted to be real with you about why I’ve been so quiet.
To be perfectly honest, I’m not enjoying being on Instagram lately. I’ve found that my time off-app, spending quality time with friends, playing The Sims, and crochet, leaves me feeling so much more fulfilled. Whenever I open this app, I’m either met with things that make me feel sad or just plain inadequate, and I’m trying hard not to invite that into my life.
But then there’s the professional side. I’m so lucky to do the work I do, freelancing in the theatre, working on the ships, and teaching, but that income isn't always consistent. When it’s quiet, I rely on my own business to fill the gaps. The reality is, I feel like I need to be here to sell my work and pay my bills. It’s a strange, difficult position to be in: needing to promote what I make on a platform that drains me.
I’m struggling to find the balance between filling my cup with things that bring me joy and doing the "middle work" required to sell those things to lovely people like you. I don’t have an answer, and I know I’m not the only one feeling this way. I’d love to keep sharing my work and having these conversations without the pressure of algorithms or chasing viral hooks.
I’m trying to send out a weekly newsletter, but it often feels like I’m talking into the void. If any of you have found a better way to stay connected, a way to share and chat that doesn't involve the draining side of social media, I am all ears.
For now, this is why I’m not as active. I’m still here, I’m still making, and I’m so grateful for your support. I just need to protect my peace a little more while I do it x
