There are many ethical issues in the fashion industry, and some of these are particularly problematic in the costume industry. One of the key issues is lack of budget, which can mean productions end up sourcing cheap, low quality costumes from manufacturers using slave labour in their supply chain and dumping dyes and chemicals into water supplies.
Fortunately there are many options to sustainably sourcing costumes. A low budget production can hire costumes so that they last longer or reuse old clothes sourced from charity shops. Costumes can also be made by adapting unwanted clothes or old costumes into new designs or made from scratch using offcuts or unwanted textiles. And for that special outfit that you can re-use again or resell or hire out to others, you can invest in a bespoke creation using quality fabrics where you know both the people and the environment are cared for throughout the process.
