Yes I cried. Many happy tears were had this afternoon when my air conditioning unit was delivered at last!

As those of you who have been in my studio during the heatwaves know, this little room gets HOT.

I tried everything, I have reflectors on the window, multiple fans, water cooling fans, the lot. But when the studio became too hot to be able to sew, far too hot to iron anything, and impossible for brides to have fittings without being in danger of becoming ill, I knew I had to take a bigger action.

She’s not quiet, but I think you’ll all agree that a bit of background humming is better than a whole lot of sweating in your wedding dress!

Thats pretty much all my earnings for the last few months spent so if anyone fancies buying a veil or garter in my lovely cool studio, you’ll help keep me off the beans on toast supporting my one woman band tiny business. 🙏

The trick to saving money on your bridal alterations? Choosing the right dress!

Yes, there are some things you can do once you have your wedding dress (I’ll get to these in a moment) but most of the biggest savings are best made BEFORE you buy your dress.

🪡 Choose your hem wisely.
It doesn’t matter if you only need a little or a lot off your hem to get the fit right- the way to save money on your alterations is to choose a hem that is easy to alter. So avoid lace appliqué and stiffened horse hair braid hems (which can add £££) and go for a plain hem.

🪡 Avoid damaged or badly fitting sample dresses.
Yes, you might save a bit by buying a sample dress rather than a brand new one, but if you then need your dress cleaned, mended and taken in by 3+ sizes to make it fit, you’ll find the alteration costs will add up fast and ruin any savings you made.

🪡 Buy a dress that already matches your vision.
I love making style changes to my brides dresses- like adding a cheeky thigh slit or creating bespoke sleeves, but these changes take a lot of time and experience to get right so they do come with a price tag to match. Often your dream dress WITH those sleeves already exists so shopping with this in mind can save you a lot in the long run.

Already have your dress and want to save on your alterations? Here’s a couple of things you can do-

🪡 Ask your seamstress if there are cheaper ways to get the same effect. They may be happy to take a ‘short cut’ that looks the same from the outside of the dress but might not be quite the same as their usual standard on the inside.

🪡 Opt for a simple bustle instead of a complex one. The fewer bustle points we have to sew, the cheaper it is!

🪡 Bring your shoes to every appointment. Many seamstresses charge to reschedule fittings due to forgotten shoes as it is extra time they are spending pinning rather than sewing!
