Here we are at Wimbledon Art Fair and it’s good to be back. Lots of nice people wanting to talk about hats and felting and dyeing. They don’t expect to see me there in the middle of the painters and ceramicists. As ever, what is selling is completely unpredictable!

Happy customer wearing her new crocheted hat. The yarn is Retwisst, recycled new cotton with a bit of polyester, and a wonderful slow stripe dye. Lovely to work with. I found it at of Wool, an excellent wool shop in Ryde, Isle of Wight.

Wimbledon Art Fair 14th- 17th November if it happens. We are required to produce a ‘small board’ as part of the fundraising. It’s always hard for me as I make wearables that are bigger than 9 inches square. This year I’ve been eco-dyeing so have managed to achieve this - maple leaves and Michaelmas daisy flowers on ponge silk. It’ll have to do as the deadline is in two days and the really big challenge is fixing it to the board!!

Second experiment with botanical printing on silk. The first effort wasn’t impressive. I’m exploring how various types of leaves print and am very surprised at how well the acacia (top left) came out, knowing nothing about it and had to ask what it is. Turns out it’s rich in tannin so my next project will be a proper scarf length with acacia. The fig in the middle is a bit average, though the ferns are interesting and the maple is nicely outlined.

I’ve been making scrubs and generating a lot of scrap fabric of odd shapes. I don’t want to throw them out. Some I’ve shredded to make stuffing for the cat’s bed I intend to make. The rest I’ve cut into strips and am making into a rug/wallhanging on my peg loom. This is my first attempt to master the technique and you can see where I get better!

I’ve been sewing scrubs etc and people have donated bedding. Some had valences which cried out to be made into a tiered skirt. I’ve also recently invested in a gathering foot which I’ve been dying to try out on a proper garment. So I’ve made an underskirt/rehearsal skirt for our amdram group, if theatres ever open again... learned a lot about using the gathering foot in the process.

Still not a lot of call for hats other than scrub caps. Here are some ‘no-gap’ face masks. Very easy to make and excellent online tutorial. There is much discussion about filters. Tightly woven cotton is recommended so these are all made with Liberty Tana Lawn. The wire over the nose stops glasses fogging up!

Not much call for hats so I’m doing other stuff. First attempt at scrubs, trying out the pattern. Not perfect, but wearable. There are various improvements I can make, such as making the pockets slightly bigger and adding a top pocket. And I’m researching a different neckline. It’s like the first pancake but I won’t throw it down the sink!!!

We need to increase our stock ready for Wimbledon Art Fair - if it happens! I did an experiment using this technique of merino fibre and silk pieces on silk gauze and could have sold it numerous times. So here’s my latest creation along the same lines. Great fun to make and it doesn’t take too long. Workshops available!
