It's autumn 😬

The tirricks (arctic terns) are leaving ...
They left me at Bakka on Sunday evening / early Monday morning, now here in Lerwick harbour today.

And we've only had 3 or 4 days of 'summer' weather!

But the birds know when it's time to go, when the weather is changing. Although they have never left as early as this before.

Fare thee well, oh summer friends! Bon voyage, bon vent and I hope you make it back next year.

Pure bred black Shetland sheep tend to go grey as they age.

The small family mill which spun my fleeces into the most beautiful semi-worsted yarn took out the greyest of the fleeces, and so the Shetland black is much darker than you will easily find commercially. Zoom into the second photo - there is very little flecking.

I have supplies of both 4ply and DK weights with me. They are wound in 100g skeins and 4ply is 230m or 260m long depending on which colour, DK is 160m for both.

Customers love this scarf for its simple elegance.

It was inspired by a headpiece which is in the archives of the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh, interestingly not knitted in Shetland wool but in rayon.
There is a school of thought which says the headpiece was used for religious ceremonies given the patterns in the motifs.

The BAKKA van will be open until 4pm, just off the Esplanade, a short walk from the shuttle stop and nearly opposite Victoria Pier.

The Mira is the newest of the fleet, only launched in May. Beautiful lines, don't you think?
