This elegant and dramatic gown is inspired by the styling of the 50’s and has become a favourite with Etsy shoppers. Each week Etsy send a report of which dresses have been favourited the most and this one is constantly up at the top.

It is the epitome of elegance, designed to be sumptuous in silk duchess satin tones of oyster and ivory. A dress less ordinary and those of us who have seen the film ‘Mrs Harris Goes To Paris’ will know where I am coming from on this.

I loved the afore mentioned film, relating to the aspiration and adoration of beauty in cloth and design. Appreciating the passion and desire to own something so special to lift the heart and soul. A delightful film centred around the pivotal character of Mrs. Harris who does indeed go to Paris.

A wonderful image of a cafe scene in Deauville, drawn by Carl Erickson for Vogue in the January 1955 issue. The opening line is….anyone who imagines that the age of elegance is dead has only to take a plane on an hour’s flight to find it living in the sparkling freshness of Deauville.

Well, I’m glad, and if I was an impressionable young lady of the day I imagine that I would yearn to hop on a flight to France in search of elegance and assured by Vogue that I would surely find it. I would save my pennies for the long weekend that would be needed in my search and scour the local fabric shops to make a stylish outfit before the weekend.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After all if I am to find elegance there I must look as if I could recognise it in the sparkling freshness of Deauville. The article goes on to mention the Casino where Gloria Swanson is amongst the players on the Salle Prive’. I would surely have seen her enter the Casino and be convinced that she was the height of elegance. Had I found a sample of it, was I on the right track?

I would surely love the café society and have a meal in the Bar du Soleil (illustrated in here) where well known artists and designers frequent. I would feel part of the elegance and love the sophisticated atmosphere. I can so imagine finding what I was looking for…………….

I wonder if Deauville is still a place of elegance nearly 80 years on, perhaps I should visit although not to find elegance as I believe it is integral to each person but I would hope to be elegant whilst there! #1950’selegantstyle

Creating a lace collar is not always placing the pattern on the lace and cutting around it, for small sections like this, lace motifs need to be sewn together to maximise the floral design.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here you can see that I have a selection of cut floral lace motifs from a length of lace, selecting suitable motifs to create the collar.
As the collar is shaped the lace motifs need to follow the neck curve by angling the motifs for permanent sewing. It is then cut with the pattern piece under the lace and checked all the time so that the motifs you want to show are looking correct.

How sweet is this..........advert for stockings in the mid 1950’s. The art work is sensitive and delicate, no makers name emblazoned across the product just the sense of how the stockings will feel on your legs. Using a fairy image to show lightness and flowers for femininity, so subtle.....I love it.

How things have changed in the advertising world, I don’t know about you but I find some advertising can be aggressive and perform like a bulldozer over your senses. The appeal of the opposite is refreshing. #1950’sadvertisingstyle

Collars are big news in current fashion trends at the moment, have you noticed that female celebrities, chat show hosts and even news readers are following the trend of large flat collars on dresses and blouses?

Fashion alert on collars, the bigger the better, however it comes with a warning, it is a hard look to pull off well. How about looking at something more elegant, I spotted this in Vogue, March 1955, about Trends in Paris with a section on collars.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The descriptions and illustrations are cute, the first one has as a circular stand away roll collar, the middle has a shoulder wide turn down collar, edged in glazed white and the last is throat high, narrow roll collar slanted across asymmetrically.

You could be a fashion leader here as I predict that collars will continue to be prominent over the winter season with inspiration from the past. As long as it is exaggerated in some way, I love a big collar, liking the middle collar here and the description of glazed white. #1950’sstyle vogue fashion

Inspired Dior Dress……………Yay, one of my fav clothing era’s, I just love the drama in the shapes created during the late 40’s when Dior began to influence the fashion world. He was coined the Prince of elegance as he dressed every woman in the public eye from head to toe, underclothing included.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I admit, I indulged and designed three dresses fully inspired by the Dior look using many layers of black tulle for the skirts that dip longer towards the back hemline. Just this detail is elegant on a woman, not to mention the way that the ruched tulle over the body caresses the curves and defines the waist.

Imagine how glorious it would be to wear a dress like this to an event, heads would turn in admiration and awe. The feel of the dress, incredible, no wonder it was such a popular shape in the 50’s and endures today. #1940’sstyle #50’sskirtporn #1950’sfashion
