After weeks of hard work and dedication, the 'Baverstock' scarf is finally here! 🍂

Using specialist heritage techniques, and our historic machinery, this square scarf has been designed, woven and hand-finished here at Whitchurch Silk Mill.

The ‘Baverstock’ celebrates Joan Baverstock, a skilled silk weaver who worked at Whitchurch Silk Mill for 25 years between 1963 and 1989. During her time at the Mill, Joan became an accomplished weaver, producing silk for Burberry, academic robes, the V&A, and celebrated productions such as Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, and Les Misérables.

Remembered for her dedication and love of the Mill, the ‘Baverstock’ scarf serves as a tribute to Joan; someone whose passion helped shape Whitchurch Silk Mill’s modern history.

🎃 Help Us Create a Handmade Harvest at Whitchurch Silk Mill! 🧶🍂

We're looking for knitters and crocheters to join us for a Community Pumpkin Knit-In at Whitchurch Silk Mill on Wednesday 16 September, from 10.30 am to 3.30 pm.

As part of our Harvest & Heritage Festival (23rd to 25th October), we're creating a colourful display of handmade pumpkins and would love your help.

Please bring your own knitting needles or crochet hooks. We'll provide the wool, stuffing and plenty of inspiration!

You can drop in for an hour or stay for the whole day, and tea, coffee and biscuits will be available.

To help us plan materials, please let us know if you're hoping to come along by emailing the Mill [email protected].

Weaving shot silk is a treat for all the senses here at Whitchurch Silk Mill. ✨

Our heritage machinery powers through the years, with the same mechanical movement heard generations ago as today. Shot silk is especially unique, as the two-tone effect created by the weft is a visual delight, bringing a jewel-like contrast to our latest design.

This video reveals 'Lichen' and 'Arbon' - the first two weft choices in our 'Starling' design. Test the strength of our chalk twists! 💪

Each of these threads has been hand twisted with the 'Solstice' warp to ensure a safe journey through the loom. When we pull the threads through, we're able to see how tightly these are twisted. Most of the threads make it through without any trouble! For those that don't - and there aren't many - we bring them through individually to finalise the new warp.

'Starling' has now taken its place on Loom 5, a 1908 Tappet loom, and it's ready to weave. If you're interested in supporting the maintenance and repair of these historic machines, our Crowdfunder campaign is still active - visit the link in our bio for more info! 🧵

After twisting together 10,296 silk threads, our weavers are almost ready to start weaving!

Shortly, 'The Starling' will start to materialise, using deep purple and blue shades in the warp, and a variety of different colours, such as green and light blue, in the weft. This creates a beautiful woven contrast, otherwise known as shot silk!

Have you ever seen this rare heritage craft? 🪡

Yes, twisting on has begun once more! As one of only a few artisans carrying out this unique skill, Whitchurch Silk Mill is preserving historic craftsmanship for the next generation.

Watch as our Weaver Tackler combines the silk threads from the old warp, 'Solstice', to the new warp, 'Starling'. These threads are joined together by a 'twist', allowing us to pull the new warp through the loom, ready to be secured on the other side.
