On my evening walk, foraging for Blackberry leaf to help alleviate the WORST menstrual cramps 😫 🌸

I honestly bang on about this all. the. time....but the most prolific plants, the ones that grow absolutely everywhere, do so for a REASON, in my humble experience.

But ignore me, I'm just cramp.

Cedar Of Lebanon.
Sacred, pertinent.

The wood used to build King Solomons temple. It is on the Lebanese flag, such is its importance. I stand in the sunshine and contemplate it and the state of the World before us.

It's rare to find a specimen quite so vast. This one is an old friend and happens to be on my doorstep. It was hit by lightning several years ago and I've collected winfdallen bits of it and foraged leaf tips over the years, and I've tinctured both parts to make a very special perfumers alcohol extraction.

The smell....oh, it's so gorgeous. It's deep, resinous, and slightly smoky.

Leopard’s Bane, more commonly known as Arnica is one of the most trusted traditional herbs for physical recovery and topical care of inflamed muscles and tendons.

This bright yellow flower has been used for centuries across European herbal traditions, particularly as a topical remedy for bruises, sprains, and muscle soreness.

Arnica is especially valued for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Applied as creams, oils, or made into salves, it is traditionally used to reduce swelling, ease muscle tension, and support the body’s natural healing after injury or strain.

It has also been used to help improve circulation to affected areas, healing of bruises, supporting soft tissue damage, and gently encouraging tissue repair.

Beyond muscular and joint support, arnica has a long history of external use for minor wounds, skin irritation, and inflammation, making it a staple in traditional first-aid herbal preparations.

Arnica is primarily used externally. It is incredibly potent and can be toxic if used on broken skin.

In folklore Arnica was believed to ward off negative energy and offer protection, as well as bring good luck when placed around the home.

In European traditions Arnica was associated with strength, resilience and protection.

Some legends say it sprang from lightning strikes, believed to carry the powerful healing energy of the earth itself ⚡️🏵

Today Leopard’s Bane remains a foundational herbal remedy for external healing, a plant that bridges traditional wisdom with modern herbal practice.

Mullein, Verbascum thapsus, is a plant that sits very firmly within the old respiratory tradition of Western herbalism, and it has been relied upon for centuries as a gentle yet effective ally for the lungs and mucous membranes.

The leaves and flowers are rich in mucilage and saponins, which together give it a dual action: it soothes irritated tissues while also helping to loosen and move stagnant mucus, making it particularly suited to dry coughs, bronchial congestion and general irritation of the upper respiratory tract.

It is not only a lung remedy but part of a broader anti-inflammatory tradition, as Mullein contains flavonoids and related compounds which are associated with anti-inflammatory effects that make Mullein a plant ally across respiratory, muscular, and even digestive complaints. In practice, it has also long been used to soothe the throat, ease hoarseness, and calm inflamed tissues, whether taken as a tea infusion or applied topically.

It was also a practical plant, and one of its most striking uses was as a source of light. The tall, fibrous flowering stalk, once dried and dipped in tallow or wax, served as a torch or lamp wick !
