White stops working in September.
Not because of a rule, but because of the light. Summer light is high and hard, and white holds up under it. Autumn light comes in low and grey, and white goes cold against it, closer to blue than to warm.
Cream does what you wanted white to do. So does oatmeal, and mushroom, and the soft off-whites that carry a little yellow. Put any of them next to camel or chocolate and the whole thing warms up instead of splitting in two.
It is the smallest change you can make to a wardrobe and one of the ones you notice most. Same shirt, same trousers, one degree warmer.
