Bev, from Delamere, is one of the friendly faces you’ll find volunteering at our St Luke’s at 72 shop, but her journey started on the other side of the counter.
“I used to be a good customer and I loved it. The people here were always so lovely, I got talking with them and eventually became friends through the shop.”
After retiring two years ago, Bev was looking for something new and found the perfect opportunity to give back. Now, after a year and a half of volunteering, she’s discovered so much more than she expected.
“I get a lot of fun and camaraderie out of volunteering. The people who work and volunteer here have become good friends of mine. We organise evenings and social events, it’s a really helped me socially.”
Whether it’s day-to-day teamwork or special moments like the spring stock event, Bev says the experience is all about connection and shared purpose:
“The spring stock event really showed what it’s all about. I met people I’d never met before, everyone came together and became one unit all working together towards a common goal.”
And how would she describe the atmosphere?
“It’s almost like a community club here, a Richard Osman situation!”
Thinking about volunteering? Bev’s advice is simple:
“Come in, have a go. You don’t have to commit but just give it a go and become a friend of the Hospice.”
