Wolverhampton Creative Embroiderers

Wolverhampton Creative Embroiderers We are a friendly, welcoming, independent stitch group, affiliated to the Embroiderers' Guild. Open to anyone 18+ who shares our interests. Buses 10.

We hold workshops and lectures twice a month in Swindon, just South West of Wolverhampton, usually on Saturdays. We are very pleased to welcome new members to our Branch. You can join with little or no experience and you will soon see that we are pleased to help and to share ideas. Our Branch is long-established and its members are an enthusiastic group of embroiderers with a range of textile inte

rests which span a wide range of techniques; some members are beginners who have never tried a particular technique; others have more experience in some areas through City and Guilds. You may like to attend lectures at first and then perhaps take part in a workshop later. Sometimes members bring to lectures the work they did at a recent workshop. From these samples you will gain some idea of the range of ability and activity. Our meetings take place at Tettenhall Wood Institute,
Wood Road,
Tettenhall Wood, Wolverhampton, WV6 8NF. Joining the Branch
The membership fees are set out on the membership application form. When completed this should be sent or given to the membership secretary who will issue you with a membership card. You should receive a printed card version of the programme for the stitching year a few weeks after the AGM. Programme
Our programme consists of lectures, workshops and Members’ workshops. There may also be a trip organised. You will find that quite often a tutor gives a lecture which is followed by a workshop led by him/her; at other times the lectures and workshops stand alone. Members’ workshops may be led by one or more members of the Branch who are happy to share their knowledge of a particular technique. The Members’ workshop at the end of the Autumn Term is also the occasion of our Christmas party. Lectures
Lectures begin at *2:00pm with doors open from 1:30pm. This is to give you time to look at the bookstall and the sales table, buy a raffle ticket and book your workshops. Lectures finish for 4:00pm. There is a charge to members of £2 which helps to cover the costs involved in the item on the programme. Non-members are charged a slightly larger fee but are very welcome.
*Please note that our AGM is combined with a lecture in October and we have an earlier start on that occasion. Workshops
These begin promptly at 10:00am but you need to arrive before that in order to prepare for the practical work. You will have been given a requirement list when you booked for the workshop; sometimes a tutor will bring a quantity of an item on the list for you to buy; this is useful when only a small amount is required. Lunch is not provided so you need to bring a packed lunch. We do have facilities for making hot drinks at workshops.

Our latest workshop was “Dragonflies and Leaves” by Sylvie Millen. The day was started with experimental circles, getting used to free motion embroidery in circle shapes, whilst trapping small pieces of fabric into the circles.
We followed this up with an afternoon of stitching either a dragonfly, butterfly or flower using free motion embroidery on water soluble fabric. Sylvie was a great help going round giving creative advice and trouble shooting any machine difficulties!

The final part of the day was a grand reveal of us all dissolving the work together and watching the pieces become complete. Here is a collection of the completed work from the day, just after it was dissolved, and a few still attached to the dissolving fabric.

Workshop open for booking!

On Saturday 20th June, Julia Wright will be delivering her workshop called “Landscape fragments”.

Here’s a brief overview of the plan:

“Students will experiment with fabric manipulationtechniques including wrapping and binding, entrapment and hand couching to create colourful, textural, mixed media pieces inspired by close-up details seen in landscapes and coastal areas. We will work with mixed natural fabrics to create structural fabric forms which can then be combined and hand stitched onto backing fabrics to begin a more resolved composition or remain as a series of separate samples. No previous experience is needed.”

Booking open for members only in the first instance. Places limited so book now to secure your place!

Our lecture this month was stories in stitch by Sylvie Millen, who took us through her time developing as an artist. She brought some wonderful pieces to show us that have been on display in exhibitions, and discussed her inspirations of fragility and strength.

Sylvie is also running a workshop for us called “Stitched leaves and Dragonflies” on May 16th. We will share some of the work our members create on that day, it’s sure to be creative!

Our members workshop had the chairs challenge! This is where the chair of our committee sets a challenge for our members to work on, and the members vote for the winning piece of work. This time it was the Bayeux Tapestry’s visit to the UK that inspired the challenge. Have a look at some of the work from our members!

Angie Hughes Day 2

Our second and final day of the workshop was spent trying all the techniques we hadn’t tried from day one. Angie had given us so many ideas that a lot of our members were eager to jump right back in to making different components of our forest floor. A lot of members started putting their components together and what you see in the images is what was created by the end of the day.

The creativity and detail in the pieces shows the time and effort put in, and a lot of our members had plenty more ideas they wanted to add to these pieces. Some were finished in the second day, and some might make an appearance at our lectures where we bring finished work to show to others. We’ll be sure to post any that our members share with us!

Thank you to Angie, what a brilliant workshop!
