Going Downhill Fast

Feels that way sometimes.

In the mid 90s there was a kid in Sheffield who worked at Langsett cycles.

At the time I had just started distributing a new energy bar made in a blokes kitchen in Berkeley California .

I used to a few boxes of bars to the kid at Langsetts cos he seemed to be winning a few races .

The kid in Sheffield was Steve Peat who went on to be world champion Downhill and a bit of an icon.

The American dude making the energy bar was called Brian Maxwell who ended up building Powerbar into a huge company before selling to Nestle for a gazillion dollars .

Those two went onto great things.

Bump into Steve every now and then and he likes a bit of salvage (french laundry factory carts) and reclaim so pleased to say (well not that pleased because it was favourite slab) new boardroom table now on its way to Peatys HQ courteesy of this 3.5 m Gulta Rengas monster reclaimed from the rivers of Java .

Part 2

Produced these special edition cards for one of my “team” who accompanied me to my last ever Taipei show.

Our non existent HR department would have been none too pleased so just as well we didnt have one.

The recipient of these remains a good friend to this day so he was actually pretty pleased with them and to be honest they did pretty much summed him up as almost without exception every catastrophe had his grubby hands all over him.

He was loyal , funny , maddening , incompetent, knew bikes inside out , and was with ne maybe 10 years.

He used to drive me nuts to the point, despite years of working for us I once called him to my office after another pile of s**t was found with him at the bottom of it and I gave him two options

“Please go outside and dig 10 holes todsy .
Then tomorrow fill them in .
Just keep doing this so you cant do any more damage you utter no***ad”

Sadly at this point he would realise the love I had for him and skip off with a big smile on his face

Another time after a culmination of calamaties I called him

“You are doing my t**s in, I cant cope anymore , can I just write you a cheque for £10k and you leave right now and I never see you again”

He didnt accept .

Now before anyone gets too offended lets remember we are from Sheffield where the closer your friendship is with someone the bigger the greeting insult .

So “no***ad” is reserved for close friends, a greeting of

“Now then no***ad”
Eh up no***ad”

Di****ad probably trumps no***ad .

Id personally never use the c bomb, nor wa**er - those dont translate and are of course deeply offensive , the sweetspot in south yorkshire terms of endearment is definitely no***ad for me.

Though maybe cheesedick comes close - thats another story .

To increase effectiveness add a few words before no***ad to enhance effectiveness

“Now then you old no***ad” is a sign of deep respect and love.

Yes its officially true, I must confess I was a total p***s at many stages of my life.

Another photo courtesy of Brants archive .

Especially so in around 2018 ish Im guessing when the imbecilic low impulse threshold Reg Mombassa / Spike Milligan / Monty Python side of me decided to go to the number one bicycle industry trade show with my business card showing me as a P.E.N.I.S

Unfortunately after many years I finally met the owners of Nitto, my heroes of the industry and had to hand over my card. Might have just fluked an escape as the old fox Japanese didnt read English.

Also on the trip was Mark Lovatt and James Carter who had their own status clearly shown but more of that later .

Back in the day Joseph and Pat .

Nostalgic Sunday meander down memory lane.

Quckfire post of bikes I helped create and a few random photos blast from the past sort of thing .

Ive spent the past week moving very heavy stuff around from one place to another, washing it, cleaning it, moving it , then deciding it wasnt clean enough so washing it again then moving again but to a different place.

I think were now over half way through this painful process I always have go through so apologies to Pat and Rob. (Just need to move a few things back tomorrow that we moved today cos they were better the first time)

Anyway back to the bikes, for anyone intersted heres my top ranked

1/. In**ed
I sort of designed it Brant sort of finished it.
Its just looks and feels right
You either get it or you dont.

2/ Space Chicken
I was very ahead of the curve on gravel in the UK and remember launching the Space Chicken at the NEC bike show.
Best bike at the show by a country mile whilst the rest of the UK bike industry were scratching their heads asking what it was for.

3/ Holdsworth tour de Yorkshire team bike
I had the stupidest idea in November 2018 (i think) to put together a team and get in the UCI tour de yorkshire.
Super dumb in retrospect and virtually unimaginable to get into UCI TDY with a team that had no riders, no bikes, no UCI points.

4/ On One Fatty
Ahead of the curve again, first fatty in the UK .

Etc and the rest is history .

1984
Im young
Im stupid
Im myopic
I got my first job

I got my first and what turned out to be my only ever job (for a proper company)
Which being from Sheffield of course a steelworks .

If you are from@Sheffield steel runs through your soul, the smell and sounds and tastes of steel was the backdrop to my youth and in particular to my teenage years .

Well it wasnt really a job, it was “summer lockdoen” work which was basically when the entire population of steelworking Sheffield bu**ered off to Skeggy leaving a host of stidents to do some s**tdown tasks

I “got “the job of being sent into an underground tunnel with a big mother descaling gun blasting decades of scale and rust off a pipe .

The only reason im telling all this is because i want to share with modern day snowflakes the HR brief and health and safety presentation we received from the unfortunate bloke who had to stay behind and miss the skeggy trip

It goes like this

Boss to recruits

“Now then di*****ds listen up .
Tha needs to know two things round ere
My names Harry and Im a bastard
You can call me Harry the Bastard
Do what I my lads tell you and if you dont you can bu**er off”

That was the staff brief .

Jetwaahing always reminds me of this

Pat holding his King Dick ooh err missus Finbar Saunders special .

Found these today in the job lot of tools we just bought from a foundry in ChesVegas that closed .

Little things amuse little minds and my missus thinks its pathetic that a 60 year man still acts like a juvenile teenager .

Well ooh err missus not alf as Frankie Howard would say .

Finbarr Saunders loves em too .

Back on the Jet Wash

Mega stress last week for a variety of reasons including having to deal with the mind f**k of turning 60.

Whats that all about and feels like sitting in the care home in a s**tty nappy not too far away .

OK so I exagerate but last week was a bit of a s**tter and I did have a bit of a mental health twisting my melons man Sean Ryder week.

Anyway coming to the rescue a good bit of Jetwashing is my go to task for clearing the cobwebs and getting back into a good frame if mind .

I think its the simplicity of solitude starting with something mucky and finishing with it clean that makes me happy cos I made something go from from A to B without having to arrange a meeting and have a strategy update whilst reviewing our operational parameters to find a clear path forward.

Think Ill tell Trump and Starmer to grt on the jet wash and stop f**king up our countries .

Dips**ts ruling the asylum.

PS - the views expressed and contained herein should be ignored as I got sunstroke .
