Trashy Bags Africa

Trashy Bags Africa Trashy Bags Africa are a social enterprise company upcycling eco-friendly bags from plastic waste

We are leading the way in sustainable development in Africa, having collected & upcycled approximately 20million plastic sachets since 2007. Plastic sachets have become a big problem across Africa because of the lack of recycling initiatives and waste management infrastructure. Each month nearly 200,000 plastic sachets are collected and brought to Trashy Bags Africa by a network of people who each

obtain an income from their efforts. We employ over forty local people to collect, clean and stitch plastic trash into fashionable and useful bags and other products.

We were delighted to see Trashy Bags featured at PackJam 2026, thanks to the incredible team at .

Our newest products, including our lanyards and classic pencil cases, were showcased in the hands of students throughout the event. It was especially inspiring to see so many people wearing unique, multicoloured lanyards made from fabric off-cuts, each one telling its own story of reuse and creativity.

Moments like this highlight the power of design, education and sustainability coming together. Thank you to everyone involved for supporting our mission and giving new life to materials that would otherwise go to waste.

We are proud to be part of a community that is shaping a more sustainable future.

What an inspiring visit! πŸŒβ™»οΈ

Last week we welcomed 32 amazing students from Freedom House International School to Trashy Bags. They came ready to learn about recycling as part of their school curriculum and left ready to make a difference in their communities.

The students discovered how waste can be transformed into useful products and why recycling matters for our environment. But more importantly, they embraced a powerful message they will carry forward as young ambassadors for change:

β€œLearn not to throw away, learn not to burn.”

Their curiosity, energy and enthusiasm reminded us why education is such an important part of what we do. The future of our planet is in good hands! 🌱

Today we say a heartfelt thank you and congratulations to Alima as she begins a well-deserved retirement. πŸ’š

Alima joined Trashy Bags back in 2008, at a very early and formative stage of our journey. From those humble beginnings to where we are today, she has been part of our story every step of the way. Her commitment, resilience and quiet strength have helped shape Trashy Bags into what it is now, and we are deeply grateful for the many years she dedicated to our team.

Alima is a proud mother of four children, Yaoza, Hindu, Jamal and Salim, most of whom are based in Kumasi, where she will now be joining them as she starts this new chapter of life.

Alima, thank you for everything you have given to Trashy Bags over the years. We wish you every happiness, good health and joy in your retirement. You will always remain part of the Trashy family. πŸ’šβ™»οΈ

Last month, School in a Bag, in partnership with Trashy Bags Africa , handed out 1,000 SchoolBags to children across three schools in the Medina suburb of Accra. We were incredibly honoured to have Dan and Jack from Reach Youth to assist with the distribution.

Each is filled with essential learning materials that help children reach their potential. But these aren’t just ordinary bags β€” every one, along with its pencil case, is made from recycled plastic waste by Trashy Bags Africa.

This collaboration not only supports children’s education but also teaches communities about waste management and environmental responsibility. 🌍✏

πŸŽ’ Sponsor a SchoolBag today and help us reach even more children in need.

Thank you to for all the amazing content.

We are proud to announce that Trashy Bags Africa has been selected as a winner of one of the iF SOCIAL IMPACT PRIZE 2025! πŸŽ‰

A huge thank you to the iF Design committee for recognising our mission and the impact of our work.

Winning this prize means a great deal to our entire team. The funds will go directly towards purchasing new eco-impactful equipment, enabling us to upskill some of our lower-skilled workers through hands-on training. It will also allow us to remove even more plastic waste from our environment – turning what is pollution into opportunity.

This award not only supports our growth but also strengthens our commitment to creating a cleaner, greener future for Ghana and beyond. πŸŒπŸ’š

πŸŽ’ Empowering Education with Purpose! πŸŽ’

A huge thank you to School in a Bag for the generous donation of 200 school bags - each one packed with essential school supplies and hygiene products for the children at Children of the Light in Northern Ghana. These bags are a gift of opportunity, helping children stay equipped, confident, and ready to learn.

What makes these bags even more special? They were made by using plastic waste collected from the streets and beaches of Accra – turning pollution into practical, purposeful tools for learning. β™»οΈβœ¨

A special shout-out to Elvis, our incredible Factory Manager at Trashy Bags Africa, for your commitment and hands-on leadership, including travelling to the north to personally oversee the distribution. Your dedication truly made a difference.

And with another 50 bags still to be handed out, the impact continues to grow.

πŸ‡§πŸ‡·πŸ€πŸ‡¬πŸ‡ We were honoured to welcome the Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana, Mariana Madeira, to the Trashy Bags factory!

Her Excellency was fascinated by our innovative approach to turning plastic waste into practical, stylish products β€” and even more inspired by our commitment to education. From school visits to our factory to distributing eco-learning resources through our partnership with School in a Bag, she explored how Trashy Bags is helping shape a greener future for Ghana's next generation.

We're excited about the possibilities for deeper collaboration with Brazil and grateful for the Ambassador's interest in supporting our mission. πŸŒπŸ’ΌπŸ“š
