To bring the Galamsey outfit to life, we had to create a fabric that carried the weight of our message.

The Galamsey fabric isn’t just textile.
It is a visual protest against the destruction of our water bodies, our land, and our people in Ghana.

The fabric was intentionally hand-painted to mirror the raw impact of illegal mining and environmental loss, while honoring the traditional artistry of those who respect the earth.

We worked with artists from The Spread Out Initiative, some who had experienced personal loss through Galamsey.

We turned crisis into canvas so the world couldn’t look away. And we are beyond grateful to the British Council for the opportunity to take this to the AFWL global stage.

When you’re given a platform that celebrates African creatives, you use it to talk about what actually matters to Africans.

That’s what Republic of Africa did on the runway at AFWL.
Our collection, Remembering The Future, was a call to recalibrate, to remember how our ancestors cared for our land, before we lose the future we’re building on top of it.

In Ghana, illegal mining(galamsey) has poisoned our water bodies and our people.

Recently most parts of West Africa flooded because we’ve built on our waterways and stopped respecting the land the way those before us did.

Our collection featured a protest piece, as well as pieces that highlighted our rich minerals, vegetation, water and our collective power.

The next couple of days we will take you on a journey as we show you everything that happened when we took the stage as well as the behind the scenes that brought it all together.
