WORKPLACE WISDOM
Reflections To Inspire Excellence
By Rev Isaac Apenteng
WISDOM LESSON 20
**The Margin (The Wisdom of the Buffer)**
“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.”
*Proverbs 22:3*
An organisation operating at 100% capacity at all times is an organisation on the verge of a catastrophic breakdown. If your calendar is booked back-to-back from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with zero breathing room, a single delayed meeting or a traffic jam will derail your entire day and spike your stress levels.
Wisdom requires **Margin**—the deliberate inclusion of "white space" between tasks and commitments. Margin is not dead time; it is the safety buffer that absorbs unexpected operational shocks, allows for spontaneous collaboration, and keeps your spirit anchored in peace.
Reflection Questions
1. **The Exhaustion Loop:**
Do I leave meetings completely breathless, running straight into the next sync without a moment to process or take notes?
2. **The Creative Void:**
When do I have time to actually *think* about our strategic direction if every minute of my day is completely booked with ex*****on?
3. **The Panic Threshold:**
How do I react when an unexpected crisis hits? Does it shatter my day because I've built zero margin into my schedule?
Call to Action
**Today’s Challenge:**
Build a **15-Minute Buffer** before and after every major commitment today. Use this white space to step away from your desk, stretch, document your action items from the previous meeting, and mentally reset before the next one begins.
A Prayer for the Workday
*Lord, deliver me from the pride of an over-packed schedule. Help me to value margin as a vital component of my strategy rather than a waste of time. Give me the prudence to build buffers into my day so that I can respond to unexpected challenges with calm, professional grace. Amen.*
