THE MELISSINOS TWINS — WHERE CRAFT AND POETRY BECAME A FAMILY LEGACY

The fraternal twin brothers George Melissinos, the sandal maker (left), and Michael Melissinos, the poet (right), who together founded the family workshop in 1920. Michael died young during a European wartime conflict in northern Greece, but his literary spirit remained part of the Melissinos legacy.

A MELISSINOS SANDAL FROM THE 1960s - MELISSINOS ART – The Poet Sandal Maker

An original handmade design by Stavros Melissinos, photographed with the historic label of the legendary workshop at 89 Pandrossou Street, Athens. Created during the decade when he helped reintroduce the ancient Greek sandal to modern fashion, this rare model is no longer produced and survives as part of the Stavros Melissinos Archive, bequeathed to his son, Pantelis Melissinos of MELISSINOS ART – The Poet Sandal Maker.

THE YOUNG AND THE WILD — NAME DAY SPECIAL
Starring Melissinos Pantelis
Today, the leading man celebrates his Name Day.

Many hairstyles ago, in 1980, a talented young Greek artist arrived in New York armed with ambition, impossible dreams, and the unshakable conviction that Manhattan had been waiting for him to make his grand entrance as its leading man.

Today, the hair may have changed, Manhattan may have recovered, and being “young and wild” may require slightly better planning—but the star is still accepting wishes, applause, compliments, and suitably extravagant declarations of admiration.

FORTY-NINE SUMMERS AGO…
That’s me on the left—Pantelis Melissinos—Frisbee in hand, and my cousin Tony on the right, searching for the perfect position to receive it, as we played on Karfas Beach, Chios, with the coast of Turkey quietly watching from across the water.
We were young, sunburnt, gloriously unaware of time—and apparently convinced that this very serious game would last forever.
The Frisbee may have disappeared, and the years certainly haven’t waited, but the memories remain as bright as that Chios summer.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION

A Family Moment in the Melissinos Workshop During the 2004 Athens Olympic Games

Amid the excitement of the Athens Olympics, the Melissinos workshop became a lively international gathering place of its own—welcoming celebrities, seasoned jet-setters, aspiring celebrities, journalists, crews from international television networks, and an assortment of other glamorous characters.

Pictured are Stavros and Sophia Melissinos on the right, alongside their son Pantelis and Valerie, a French visitor to the workshop.

The photograph was taken in the family’s interim workshop, where the Melissinos business was based for fifteen years before moving to its present home near the Acropolis Museum. Surrounded by sandals, tools, and the cheerful disorder of workshop life, everyone paused just long enough for Valerie’s friend to capture the moment.

The photograph soon made a round trip of its own—from Athens to France and then back to me, courtesy of Valerie herself.

DENNIS THE MENACE IN THE SANDAL WORKSHOP

You could say Pantelis Melissinos grew up in this historic workshop, just one block away from his elementary school.

After school, he would often drop by to see his father, Stavros, and “help” around the shop. At least, that is what Pantelis thought he was doing.

Stavros, on the other hand, often saw him as a little Dennis the Menace—asking questions, touching everything, getting in the way, and somehow always ending up in the middle of the action.

But through all those afternoons in the workshop, Pantelis was quietly learning the craft and family tradition he continues today.

“I asked for colour… and Pantelis gave me a small fiesta for my feet!”

This custom “Jeremy Irons” model was made for an American lady who wanted something special, bright, and full of personality.

Bold, playful, handmade, and impossible to ignore — exactly as a happy pair of summer sandals should be.

WEARABLE ART FROM ATHENS

This “Jeremy Irons” model, created for an American lady looking for something special and colourful, brings a playful, artistic twist to a classic handmade Greek sandal.

With its bold metallic shades, touches of gold, and clean minimalist shape, it feels both timeless and contemporary — a perfect example of wearable art from Athens by Pantelis Melissinos.

POY POY – A SEASONED ART CRITIQUE

Poy Poy entered the scene with the quiet authority of a seasoned art critic.

He did not bark. He did not rush. He simply paused on the old carpet, lowered his small white head, and fixed his dark, thoughtful eyes upon the sandal.

Before him stood a work by Pantelis Melissinos: a handmade leather sandal, warm in colour, precise in construction, yet playful in spirit. Its straps crossed the foot with the simplicity of ancient Greek linework, while the bright silver flower at the centre introduced a sudden theatrical flourish — almost like a small sun, a starfish, or a mythical blossom discovered on the shore of the Aegean.

Poy Poy examined the composition carefully.

The leather, he seemed to think, had the honesty of something made by hand — not factory-perfect, but human-perfect. The stitching along the sole gave rhythm to the piece, like a quiet border around a painting. The buckle at the heel suggested function, but also ceremony: this was not merely footwear; it was an object meant to accompany movement, memory, and summer.

Then his eyes moved to the blue-painted toenails.

A bold chromatic decision.

Poy Poy approved.

The turquoise echoed the freshness of the sea, contrasting beautifully with the honey-coloured leather. It gave the whole composition a joyful, almost island-like vitality. Against the patterned carpet and the terrazzo floor, the sandal appeared not as an accessory, but as the central subject of a candid Greek tableau: craft, domestic warmth, elegance, and a small white dog conducting a very serious inspection.

After a long silence, Poy Poy delivered his verdict.

This sandal, he concluded, was not just made to be worn. It was made to be noticed, lived in, and remembered.

And because it carried the unmistakable touch of Pantelis Melissinos, Poy Poy understood that he was not looking at ordinary sandals.

He was looking at art on someone’s feet.
