The French Broad Paddle Trail is open again — 146 miles of it, with Beech Bluff campsite back and new access points added since Helene.

Volunteer cleanup crews have been on the water steadily. The river has come a long way.

One note: a 19-mile stretch is still classified as impaired, and bacterial monitoring is active. Worth checking current water-quality data before you plan your swim stops.

An interesting new technology was reported in Euronews this week to capture plastics before they reach the ocean.

The Great Bubble Barrier uses rising air bubbles to guide river plastic into a catchment before it reaches the ocean. Running now in Amsterdam and a few sites in Portugal — it catches around 86% of what's floating.

The principle is the same one behind every upstream cleanup: catch it in the watershed before it moves.

The Pasig River in the Philippines moves an estimated 38,000 tons of plastic into the ocean every year. This month, a five-year interceptor deployment agreement was signed to start catching it.

That number is genuinely hard to hold. It makes our pound-by-pound events feel small — and also clarifies why no single approach covers the whole problem. Interceptors work on what's already flowing. Volunteers work on what's happening upstream. Both make a visible impact.

The conversation on TikTok is asking a real question: does PVA — the film that makes laundry pods dissolve — actually break down before it reaches waterways?

The lab answer is generally yes. The real-world answer is still being debated. At least one study found intact PVA film in municipal wastewater effluent. The pod brands dispute the methodology.

In the meantime, we'll be switching to detergent sheets or powder detergent to try to avoid the pods.
