The Man In The Hat 帽子男

The Man In The Hat 帽子男 Men wore hats for hundreds of years. Even worse, many spend a fortune on designer clothes and then finish it off with a terrible fedora made of paper.

But something changed in the 1960s and the average man now walks the world with a bare head, covered by an occasional baseball cap. But now, it's time to stop being average...

At The Man In The Hat, our mission is, starting from Hong Kong, to re-introduce the love of high-quality men's hats. We find new owners for extraordinary hats and we resurrect vintage styles. And we revive the classics by

custom-making hats for those who want to be unique. Follow us on social media to learn about the history of hats, the dedication of modern artisans and the almost forgotten skills of hatmaking. See classic hat styles and the men - and women - who made them famous. In our expanded store in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong, we have a stunning collection of classic, vintage and custom hats. We are open most days (but not fixed hours) and you can contact us anytime for an appointment. Spend time with the best hats in town. Maybe you’ll become The Man In The Hat!

Hat: beautiful vintage Borsalino stingy brim fedora.
So, as is well known every aficionado of hat history, all Borsalinos are purportedly made in Italy. They have always been made in Italy and this is vigorously maintained by all iterations of Borsalino’s continuing social media activity and websites. And yet, as I and many others have noted, there are many vintage Borsalino fedoras, such as this gorgeous blue example, that bear the wording ‘made in USA’ on the sweatband. So who is being economical with the truth? Was this beaver felt fedora genuinely made in America or was it all fake news? Were Borsalino hats always and only made in Alessandria, Italy?

Hat: Coppola Siciliana. The Sicilian cap was derived, in the late 19th and early 20th century, from the traditional English flat cap, which was already a favourite hat of the British working class. While the 8-panel newsboy cap, another offshoot of the flat cap, became fashionable among dandies and gangsters, the Sicilian flat cap was quickly adopted by young men throughout Italy. It’s now culturally embedded as a traditional Italian hat and was excellently modelled by Al Pacino in The Godfather (1972), in his portrayal of Michael Corleone. Today’s post shows Pacino’s Coppola Siciliana, as well as a couple of lovely vintage Borsalino caps from my own collection.

Hats:the Opera Hat. Patented by Gibus in 1837 and no longer made, the ingenious Opera Hat (or Chapeau Claque) consisting of silk satin or merino stretched over a sprung steel frame, offered the perfect solution when Top Hats had to be removed and placed under theatre seats. Elegant, robust and reliable, the Opera Hat could be squashed flat and then spring up again on demand.

The Opera Hat is a fascinating, elegant machine. When it opens, it seems almost magical. When it closes, it fits inside your knapsack. If you want to go the full Fred Astaire but still travel light, it is your best choice of formal party headwear. Or, indeed, for the Opera.

In this post, you can see a few of my own personal Opera Hats, which have been making heads spin in Hong Kong since the first outing in 2015, when the event MC created my new nickname: The Man In The Hat! And the rest, as they say, is a pretty good story…

Hats: it’s been a very busy month, as we shut down the shop in Hong Kong, completed the sale of our apartment, moved into a long stay hotel, celebrated my birthday with friends, chilled out at the beach and shipped practically everything we own back to England! Plenty of chances to wear gorgeous hats, including a vintage silk topper and a vintage Bowler, both by Dunn & Co, a vintage Opera Hat by Henry Heath, a superb vintage Coppola Siciliana by Borsalino, a Stetson Open Road in palm straw and one of our outstanding The Man In The Hat Montecristi Panamas. What a great month!
