We cannot celebrate 250 years of American Independence without acknowledging that we have not all been treated equal (minorities, women, immigrants, LGBTQ), Black people have only been free for 161 of those struggling years, acknowledging that Native Americans were here before all of us and have tirelessly tried to preserve their tribal lands as well as their heritage & culture, acknowledging that we have taken giant leaps backwards in our laws, policies, our everyday lives, and our basic decency toward one another. I celebrate the 4th of July with all of that in mind alongside everyone else, because I choose not to separate myself from what America has purported to be as stated in the Declaration of Independence “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
I am celebrating with all of those acknowledgments what my ancestors could not. Frederick Douglass is still shaking his head and his speech is still very much relevant today, however I say “This Fourth July is mine, not just yours” it is for all of us.
