Behind every piece of Oey Soe Tjoen batik are many hands, each with their own role in the process.

The women who make Oey Soe Tjoen batik have carried their knowledge and skills across generations. Many continue to work from home, making batik alongside their everyday responsibilities, from caring for their families to running a shop or helping with the family business.

Today, the number of pecanting has decreased from around 150 in the first generation to less than 20. Their work continues through the time and skill they bring to each piece of cloth.

The research journey to Pekalongan was documented by photographer Putu Sayoga, capturing moments from the team’s visits and encounters throughout the process.

Monumental works and celebrated names often begin with the simplest of initiatives and intentions. The motifs of Oey Soe Tjoen’s hand-drawn batik were first recorded on sheets of wax paper. Who could have imagined then that the patterns traced onto such humble material would be passed down through generations, surviving to this day as records of history?

At the Oey Soe Tjoen batik house, initiative and creativity have continued to evolve from one generation to the next. The third generation lives in a rapidly changing world, surrounded by sources of inspiration from every direction. This contemporary moment finds its expression in the new motifs designed by Widianti Widjaja, which she signs in her own name. Batik is not only a work of art and a source of community pride, but also a marker of different eras.
