Why we were veils over our faces

1. Protection from evil spirits
This is the explanation most historians consider the most likely. In ancient cultures such as Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece, veils were believed to protect the bride from evil spirits, bad luck or jealous forces that might interfere with the marriage.

2. Symbol of modesty and purity
In many Christian traditions, the veil became associated with modesty, reverence and purity. The bride would remain veiled until a certain point in the ceremony, often when the groom lifted the veil.

3. A sign of status and wealth
In some periods, particularly in Europe, the more elaborate and luxurious the veil, the wealthier the family was perceived to be. Fine lace, silk tulle and long cathedral veils were expensive status symbols.

4. The unveiling as a symbolic moment
Over time, lifting the veil evolved into a symbolic gesture representing trust, the start of married life and the transition from one stage of life to another.

Wedding Dresses Used to be Blue!

Before Queen Victoria, blue was actually one of the most popular colours for brides in many parts of Europe.

White wasn’t traditionally associated with weddings in the way it is today. Brides usually wore their best dress, which could be almost any colour depending on their wealth, local customs and personal preference.

Blue was particularly popular because it symbolised:
✨ Purity
✨ Fidelity
✨ Love
✨ The Virgin Mary in Christian tradition

That’s actually where the phrase:

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”

comes from. The blue item was meant to represent faithfulness and purity within the marriage.

Other bridal colours included:
🤍 White (worn by some wealthy brides before Victoria)
💙 Blue
💚 Green (though in some areas it was considered unlucky)
❤️ Red (common in many cultures around the world)
🩶 Silver and grey
🟤 Brown and other practical colours for everyday wear

When Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840, she deliberately chose a white satin dress with Honiton lace. Because she was one of the most famous women in the world, illustrations of her wedding were widely circulated and suddenly brides everywhere wanted to copy the look.

Before Queen Victoria made white fashionable blue was considered the colour of purity long before white became the traditional bridal shade. 💙

Its all about the volume! 🤍

One of the biggest factors in creating a veil with volume isn’t actually the gathering it’s the fabric.

If you like a reall big veil then you need a fabric with a firm handle.

A softer tulle will drape beautifully and fall closer to the body, creating a more relaxed, flowing look. A firmer tulle, on the other hand, has more body and naturally creates lift and shape.

Think of it like this: you can gather two veils exactly the same way, but if they’re made from different fabrics, they’ll behave completely differently.

When you are designing your veil chossing the right fabric is just as important as the length and finish.

I’ve been working on some designs for my winter collection of accessories and I was thinking that a cloak like this would be lovely in silk velvet.

Something to keep the winter bride warm but also look elegant. 🤍

Another one from the archives. 🤍

I really am one of the lucky ones because I genuinely love what I do and I get to meet such lovely people along the way.

Having something made specially for your wedding day is quite an intimate experience, whether it’s a veil, an accessory or a custom piece.

One of my favourite parts of the process is getting to know the brides I work with and by the end of the process I always feel that it isn’t just a busines relationship but I genuinely have made a new friend.

It’s something I’ll never take for granted.

Thank you to all the wonderful brides who have trusted me to be a small part of their wedding journey. 🤍

Why a Simple Silk Veil Works Beautifully with Lace 🤍

One of the biggest misconceptions in bridal styling is that a detailed lace dress needs an equally detailed veil.

In reality, some of the most elegant bridal looks pair intricate lace with a simple silk veil.

Lace is already full of texture, detail and romance. A plain silk veil allows those beautiful details to be the focus rather than competing with them.

A simple silk veil brings balance to the overall look. The clean, smooth lines soften the intricacy of the lace while adding movement and elegance.

Sometimes less really is more when it comes to accessories.

One of the stories I’d always heard about the origins of the wedding veil was that brides wore them to stop the groom seeing them until after the ceremony and that the less attractive the bride, the heavier the veil!

I assumed this was true until I did a bit of research! I discovered that historians believe this is largely a myth.

In many ancient cultures, veils were worn as symbols of modesty, status and protection. In some arranged marriages, the bride’s face may have been partially concealed before the ceremony, but heavier veils were generally a sign of wealth and social standing rather than an attempt to hide a slightly more unattractive bride.😂

Whether worn for tradition, symbolism or simply because they complete a bridal look so beautifully, wedding veils have been part of bridal fashion for thousands of years and continue to hold a special place in weddings today.

Where Did Wedding Veils Come From?

I have always been fasinated by the story of the veil. Wedding veils have been part of bridal fashion for thousands of years.

In ancient Rome, brides wore brightly coloured veils to ward off evil spirits. Over time, veils became a symbol of modesty and tradition before evolving into the beautiful bridal accessory we know today.

I just love the idea of a coloured veil with a champagne or warm ivory dress!

Something Old, Something New 🤍

A few years ago, I had the privilege of working on a very special project.

This bride wanted to wear her mother’s wedding dress, but rather than leaving it exactly as it was, we carefully redesigned it so that it reflected her own style.

I love these projects for me a wedding dress is more than fabric and lace, it’s a piece of history, filled with memories and emotion.

I still love this photograph all these years later. 🤍
